How much does your child get sick?

Hi,

Just that really. My youngest DS has just randomly, out of nowhere threw up all over his cot. It's a constant thing lately with bugs and sickness.

We're onto our 3rd vomitting bug of the year, since October to now we've had hand foot and mouth, tonsilitis, vomitting, ear infection, chest infection and now more vomitting.

It's endless, they seem so run down all of the time. They both attend nursery so I guess that's where they're picking up the bulk of the sickness. They're 3 and 1, eat healthy diets and are generally active. I honestly never realised kids would sick so much (complete naivety I know)

It's a struggle with childcare, DH can't take time off so Im always having to. Then usually I catch the sickness a couple of days later and end up off with that. It's a nightmare.

Sorry to rant, just an overly anxious mum needing some helpful words Smile

Been most weeks since start of term(and sane with nursery last year) that we've had something in the house. Not great when I have a low immune system too: but will be ok come spring 🤣🤣🤣

Strawberry0909 · 26/11/2022 21:19

Been something nearly every week in this house since sept also with DS 4 and DS 1
I didn't realise it would be this constant either!

I also have to take the time off as DH has no annual leave left after ages off for covid in April, don't think I've done a full (part time) week since returning from maternity!

Why they can't just be ill on my days off I don't know 😆

Betsyboo87 · 26/11/2022 21:25

Not sure how long they’ve been in nursery but the first year in nursery was awful for us. Recover from one thing and a week later there was something else. In between there was a permanent snotty nose. I’d see the nursery number flash up on my phone and my heart would sink. On the positive side, the second year has been significantly better. Just the odd day here and there. Expecting no2 now so I’m sure we’ll have to go through it again.

My DS doesn't tend to get stomach bugs (touch wood) but he is snotty and has a cough/sore throat A LOT. We went through a period of one month in the summer when he was ill pretty much every day and he missed nearly a full month at nursery. That was horrendous to go through, especially that DH and I were also poorly. Since then, he tends to miss 2-3 days a month on average I would say. Although surprisingly, he hasn't missed a day in November so maybe we are on the way out of the nursery germland! It's so tough especially when you're ill at the same time as them, I honestly had no idea until I've had him! Sympathy and warm hugs, OP. xx

LBOCS2 · 26/11/2022 21:28

I've found it particularly bad in the last 18mo, I think post lockdown. Both of mine (who are 10 and 6) have had at least a couple of days off each half term since the summer, DD2 has had two separate incidents of sickness, DD1 keeps getting really bad colds, it's just non stop.

ecnatsid · 26/11/2022 21:32

It's constant, it's so strange how one minute their fine happy and playing and the next they puke Shock

All the fucking time. Mine are 9 and 6, you just get used to it but it it does wear me down especially at this time of year when in feels non bloody stop. We have had an ill child every weekend since Halloween (this one has been ok so far but we still have a day left before I can class it as illness free).

PurplePansy05 · 26/11/2022 21:37

I agree with PPs, our GP told us repeatedly that they have been super busy seeing kids with all sorts of illnesses that weren't circulating in an ordinary way in the 2+ years of the pandemic and now this is the result, kids are exposed to all of them. So we're having it tougher than normal now. My DS is nearly 16 mo btw. Are you giving yours vitamins daily? I do and I take him out every day, no matter the weather. I also take him out a lot to mix with people/other kids and always have so in fairness he had few weeks of being poorly on maternity leave earlier this year but it has probably helped in hindsight. You have two kids though, that's another whammy as they're sharing germs between each other from literally everywhere, not sure what to suggest apart from saying once they're done with it, you should be seeing a big difference sooner than some of us?

Quornflakegirl · 26/11/2022 21:44

Quite rarely thankfully. They’re 10 now and I’d say not more than once a year. We’ve only suffered with a sickness bug once.

containsnuts · 26/11/2022 21:48

A new cold/cough every 10 days. Off school at least one week per month. Seems most kids are the same.

I went to nursery and school in the 80s & 90s and don't remember anyone being ill this much unless they had an underlying health condition! I wonder what's changed?

Smearywindowsagain · 26/11/2022 21:49

Dd1 was CONSTANTLY ill in the first two years of her life. It was hellish. She then never really picked anything up when she started school. Her immunity only seemed to wane around age 7 when she started picking up all sorts again. She even managed to get chicken pox again despite having it as a baby. The last 6 months have been particularly rubbish. She’s had norovirus twice and currently got a chest infection

kegofcoffee · 26/11/2022 21:50

I've got a 3 and 1 year old, and it's been constant since last winter.

Both the nursery and GP mentioned they've never known it so bad with youngsters. Assuming its catch up from lockdown, and once the catch up is over it'll be more normal.

I have the same issue with childcare. Husband works set hours onsite with little flex. I work from home with some flex so end up having to cover most the sick days. But with it being so constant I think work are starting to think I'm taking the piss.

LanternGhost · 26/11/2022 21:50

Literally every two weeks. I note it in my calendar. I changed industries this year and it's easier for me to take time off now but I still feel guilty. We're lucky to cobble together care with grandparents and nanny for everything except stomach bug and covid. We only have one and I'm totally tired of it!

Smearywindowsagain · 26/11/2022 21:52

should say as well her getting sick all the time coincided with post lockdown back to school so like others are saying could be that

RunLolaRun102 · 26/11/2022 21:55

DS has had most things but not D&V. I’m a bit scared of this because we’re planning a trip to India soon and I don’t want everyone’s first experience of it there.

I expected that when they first went back in 2020, then maybe the first winter, but they've been back 18 months now & 2 winters - why is it not settling?

Rachaelrachael · 26/11/2022 22:03

I also have a 1 and 3 year old at nursery and it's relentless. We all just got over hand foot and mouth a couple of weeks ago, couple of days later straight into a cold and now today I've started with flu type symptoms. I don't think there's been a day since September when we've all been fit and well

beststepforward · 26/11/2022 23:38

I find sambucol really helps cheapest on Amazon

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 26/11/2022 23:53

Rarely.
17 year old. I could Count on 1 hand since birth the amount of times had anything other than a cold, which even that was rare

4 year old same only had colds
2 yr old only had colds and 2 chest infections.

Im a mega clean freak round the house and everyone said id damage their immune system. Clearly I haven't!
. And they all did nursery, school, clubs etc

Ate healthy but also no restrictions on ' junk' as such. Well within reason. So not 10 choc bars a day but can have 1 a day, cake or whatever. So certainly not the healthiest

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 26/11/2022 23:54

There is currently HFM going round school and pre school. As well as a vomit bug but we've avoided it so far. Thankfully.

I would like to update my post to note that 9 year old has started vomiting. That is every weekend now since Haloween that one or the other has been ill with something. Had enough now. Another long night in our household.

LynLynette · 27/11/2022 00:02

My dd is in preschool and has had lots of colds but no vomiting illnesses since she started last September. In three and a half years since she was born she has vomited a handful of times. I suppose we have just got lucky plus her play group is very small which probably helps.
It does seem to be pretty normal though but if they are getting sick a lot, maybe have a word with the nursery. It’s inevitable that kids will pick things up but if it’s that frequent, it’s possible their hygiene standards are not up to scratch.

Have they had all their vaccines then?

ecnatsid · 27/11/2022 06:05

DS2 was also up throwing up in the night, it's a nightmare isn't it. He started feeling poorly on Friday so I thought he'd of escaped it by now

Mine always seemed to be sick at nursery but since they’ve started school they’ve been fine, illness has been rare and short lived.
