What do you have for lunch on a weekend?

Just that really!
Do you just have a normal sandwich or something a bit more special? If so, what?

But mostly “bread and cheese” which is invariably more filling than it sounds if you spend the week filling your fridge with the many many tiny bowls

That sounds like my grandmother, who kept tiny tiny bowls of leftovers in the fridge - things like peas and baked beans and canned tomatoes. Once a week she'd make a dish known as 'mince with the trimmings' and it all went in (and was surprisingly tasty). DB swears he saw Angel Delight in there once.

either lunch or tea, because we usually have main meal at lunchtime on Saturday:

scrambled egg with potato waffles
blt rolls
cheese on toast
falafel in pitta with shredded salad
humus with crudites
pork pie with salad/pickles
smoked mackerel with salad
boiled eggs and soldiers
home-made soup, possibly with home-made bread
-carrot and cumin, maybe with naan-recipe loaf
-leek and potato
-mulligatawny
-various vegetables (last two were celery, which we have a glut of, and broccoli which was cheap)

Bacon sandwich

christmasandsnowflakes · 26/11/2022 15:27

Thanks everyone 😊

Always impressed by the ability of Mumsnet to make an argument out of anything - even whether tuna mayo is more time consuming to make than sliced cheese!!

Haha egg mayo drama 😂
I make this quite often during the week as we have chickens so a glut of eggs to use. So egg mayo (nor tuna mayo for that matter as it’s even quicker to make!) isn’t ‘special’ here, it’s a staple.
i might eat it at the weekend if we have some.
today though I had more of a brunch time boiled eggs and soldiers so no lunch, will wait for dinner.
weekend lunches aren’t any more special than weekday lunches, I put a lot of effort into my weekday lunches sometimes because I really enjoy good food! (And sometimes I order in or eat lunch out 😂)

StaceySolomonSwash · 26/11/2022 15:34

Today we had hummus and pitta bread, both from the reduced to 20p section in Lidl. Tomorrow we've got individual chicken pies from the same 20p section. 😛

BuryingAcorns · 26/11/2022 15:44

Today I had home made carrot and ginger soup, cheese and onion toastie and satsumas. Was hungry after a hilly walk!

Beezknees · 26/11/2022 15:50

Usually an omelette on Saturdays and sausage rolls from the bakery on Sundays.

poshme · 26/11/2022 15:51

Weekdays I usually have salad.

Weekends we have cheese toasties- today with focaccia as it caught my eye in Tesco.

Sometimes home made soup (weekdays would be cup a soup)

Look I like mayo and tomato WITH my cheese so tuna would DEFINITELY be the easier option for me OK?!!! 😜

Slippersister · 26/11/2022 15:56

Normally a brunch type thing, as I don't bother with breakfast. So today, a slice of cheese on toast made with olive sourdough, topped with slices of avocado; a glass of home made banana milkshake and lashings of fresh coffee, delicious.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 26/11/2022 16:51

PinkSyCo · 26/11/2022 14:53

What do your ‘unspecial’ sandwiches consist of?

I didn't think you were being rude!

In my head there is a clear hierarchy of sandwiches:

Tier 1 - everyday: ham, cheese (usually ready sliced as I am lazy)
Tier 2 - weekend: egg, tuna
Tier 3 - Christmas, buffets: prawn mayonnaise, brie and cranberry

Pipsickl · 26/11/2022 17:00

Nice bread with something like cream cheese, ham, butter etc even gravadlax (the marinated salmon one from Aldi)

veg chunks (carrot, cucumber, tomato)

crisps

and then cuz we have kids usually cut up grapes / apple / a melon

I usually make nice coffee too

sometimes we have a pizza lunch, or bagels with scrambled eggs, or if I am properly pushing the boat out we get those pork breakfast burgers from Aldi and make homemade sausages and egg McMuffins with hash browns (but rare I can be arsed)

I love Saturday lunch it’s my fave lunch of the week as the whole family are together and I’ve usually just got back from the shops with fresh food

AlwaysLatte · 26/11/2022 17:06

Anything, depending what we are doing! Today my son had a sporting event so it was packed lunches - wraps, fruit etc. other days during the week DH and I will have leftovers in an omelette, or we'll make soup with random vegetables that need using up. Possibly leftover chilli with jacket potatoes. Depends on the day!

pairofrollerskates · 26/11/2022 17:07

Leftovers. Never cook on a weekend.

AlwaysLatte · 26/11/2022 17:08

Oh you specified weekend, sorry! Another thing we sometimes do - DS12 likes pancakes so sometimes if it's late morning we'll have those with bacon and maple syrup and grilled tomatoes for brunch.

IntentionalError · 26/11/2022 17:11

Usually nothing, because DP will be cooking something yummy for dinner ( it’s venison bourguignon tonight) and I want to have room for 3 courses & wine.

Saucery · 26/11/2022 17:12

Dippy eggs, or poached eggs.
Olive sourdough from the farm shop with whatever cheeses they have in that week.
Tuna and cheese toasties.

No more faffy to make than a lunchtime sandwich for work but boiled eggs etc don’t travel well and sit in the staff fridge Grin

Georgyporky · 26/11/2022 18:24

Pizza made with a mini tortilla wrap, tired veg, etc & air-fried.

RightBackAtYa · 26/11/2022 19:37

@SpottyStripyDuvet perhaps their hierarchy of sandwich is different to yours ?@PinkSyCo were rude, " what do your 'unspecial' sandwiches consist of?'
how do you think that made the poster feel ?

SpottyStripyDuvet · 26/11/2022 20:43

Good lord! I didn't expect my hierarchy of sandwiches to be quite so controversial. I fully accept that others may feel differently to me about it.

I have been pondering the origins of my sandwich thoughts and initially felt it must be childhood related but as I wouldn't have touched egg or tuna back in the early 80's it can't be. At that point hazlet rather than cheap ham constituted the most exciting a weekend would get.
