Anyone have a nice affordable cake recipe. Something that goes nice with custard?

We usually have apple crumble but finding it expensive

And Parkin gets better over a few days after cooking and is lovely with custard, or without custard, or with a piece of cheese.

Hairy Bikers Easy Ginger Cake is brilliant, easy, and great with custard as well as cold. Pretty cheap as it uses marg not butter and only 1 egg

Probably more cost effective to buy a madeira sponge and have that with some stewed fruit and custard.
