Ideas to make Christmas less about stuff and more about people….

Over the past ten years or so, I guess as part of a more general lifestyle inflation, our family Christmases seem to have become a lot about getting and enjoying lovely things and going out, and less about enjoying time together. Too much unnecessary shopping and multiple ‘special’ days out, which leave everyone tired. The cost of things this year has given me a shove to want to turn it around. I feel really positive about doing this, and think it might make for a less stressful and more peaceful Christmas.

We’ve decided on a few things already. Trying to do more stuff locally (using the farm shop instead of supermarket for meat, local panto instead of a London show), and inviting friends over for board game and brisket nights in lieu of presents or meals out. DD is having a Christmas baking day with a foodie friend, which they are really looking forward to. We are keen to go to services at our local church which we’ve not done for years ( I normally attend a Quaker meet with DD on Sundays, part of the inspiration for the change). There won’t be any online shops for decorations, Christmas pyjamas or other lovely but needless Christmas stuff, and we will make a food bank donation instead.

Any other thoughts or ideas would be welcomed.

Keep an eye on Facebook events - there are loads of free things around us. We did an elf trail last year round a local village. It was fantastic, DS loved it so much that we're doing it with a group of friends again this year.

My favourite memories of childhood Christmas are the smell of baking - cakes, mince pies, sausage rolls for the freezer. We used to make gift tags from last years Christmas cards, snow flakes and paper chains. Board games on a cosy Sunday afternoon. Lighting the advent candles. Opening the advent door to see the picture. Getting out the old familiar decorations. Carols by candlelight. Studding the oranges with cloves.

I now make mincemeat (Delia's recipe) every other year, as I store half of the mixture. The house just smells like Christmas for the day Smile

All very frugal, but far more joyful than these days of consumerism.

Those are great ideas. We’ve never had an advent candle, but they have some in a local shop and they aren’t expensive.
I will look out for local events too. There’s a festive dog walk raising money for a local charity next week we might do. It’s £10, but it is for a good cause and at the speed our kids walk at will be a whole day out!

Our village had a gingerbread man trail
around local shop windows, so I’ll get the biscuit cutters out and turn that into a gingerbread themed day.
