Wisdom tooth removal pain

I'm wide awake and in a lot of pain, I had my wisdom tooth out Thursday morning and I have had some pain that has been manageable with pain relief, I woke up about an hour ago and I am in quite a bit of pain, I'm confused with my pain relief now and when I can have some more, yesterday I had

6am ibuprofen
830am paracetamol
2pm ibuprofen
4pm paracetamol
7pm ibuprofen
930pm paracetamol

Does that mean I can have paracetamol now and in 2 hours I can have ibuprofen?

It says not to exceed 3 doses of ibuprofen in 24 hours or 4 doses of paracetamol, so essentially my ibuprofen with 'reset' at 6 and my paracetamol at 830?

I've thought about it too much and got confused!

I think you might need something stronger, go to a pharmacy and get something with codeine in it.

Also pick up a cold compress.

And ice cream.

My friend stayed at mine after he had his out, he went through all my cold compress / self cooling packs, ate all my ice cream and felt pretty dreadful for a few days.

Do not smoke and under no circumstances use a straw to drink from. Drinking from a straw can dislodge the clot and cause excruciating pain and something called dry socket

Honestly, it would probably be worth waiting until the phone lines are open and phoning your dentist for advice. You’d be fine to take the paracetamol and that in the meantime but it doesn’t sound like the tablets are touching the pain that much.

If they offer nowt helpful, you’ve lost nowt and you’ll be able to just keep going with those two. If they think you need something stronger, they’ll sort you out.

I don't think it should hurt so much. You probably should call your dentist in case it's dry socket. I used painkillers twice after wisdom tooth extraction recently.

ScottishInSwitzerland · 26/11/2022 06:19

I agree you should call your dentist when they open. Just based on my personal experience you shouldn’t be in this much pain.

Yes you can take paracetamol now.

I called the dentist and they said it was probably a normal amount of pain! Which is fine but on the aftercare leaflet it says to expect 'mild discomfort' and I am definitely in more than mild discomfort!

They have booked me in next week for a check but I'll either be fine by then or have had it sorted by then cos it's got worse!

I am going to the pharmacy soon to try and get better painkillers 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sorry you didn’t get a more helpful response. I had one standard and one complex wisdom tooth out - same time because in the same side - and I slept through the night with just Panadol.

If it’s still this bad by Monday I would phone again. I really don’t think it’s supposed to hurt that much.

Whiskeypowers · 26/11/2022 10:49

I just had a wisdom tooth out
it was fully through and not twisted or impacted so straightforward but I only really needed round the clock painkillers the first day.

i wonder if you’ve got dry socket? Can you see the clot still? if you’ve dislodged it then the pain will not me remotely manageable with over the counter stuff and you really need to see a dentist asap for that .

LynnBenfieldAP · 26/11/2022 11:26

Thank you

I was worried about dry socket as when I looked at it the first day it didn't look to have a clot in it, but it is hard to see with it being at the back, it was a straight forward removal, a bit of poking and pulling and it was out within minutes, the first day was not too bad, i would say it's definitely got more painful!

My partner has got me some painkillers from the pharmacy with codine in I think so I will try those and see if it makes a difference and go from there.

The dentist said if it was dry socket it would be really painful and because I wasn't in agony it probably wasn't that, but what if I'm just really brave? Grin

I had mine removed yesterday and have had no pain at all, I haven't even been warned about dry socket so worrying myself now! But the pain definitely doesn't sound normal, it could be getting infected. I would ask to get it checked x

LynnBenfieldAP · 28/11/2022 15:24

For anyone wondering I managed to get back into the dentist today and I did have dry socket so I feel very brave now! Smile

Oh goodness, what did they say? Have they given you anything for the pain/ to help it heal faster? Hope you are ok! X

LynnBenfieldAP · 28/11/2022 16:55

She put something with clove oil in the hole Confused I cannot express how bad it tastes! But it wasn't a gauze or anything it was little stringy things and I don't know if they desolve or absorb or what but they don't get taken out, it tastes gross!

They've given me antibiotics and just told me to keep taking the pain relief I have been, but I've been having co-codamol an I think you're not supposed to take that for more than 3 days so I'll have to check

I'm going to try and go without pain killer a bit in the day because I've not been sleeping from the pain and have been using all the pain relief I can in the day so I can't take anything when it's bad at night

Hopefully it starts getting better now and the taste of that clove oil starts dispersing soon! 🤞

Oh no!
thank goodness you got sorted though and yes clove oil is indeed revolting.
hope some rest and the antibiotics do the trick
