The phantom smell of smoke always precedes a migraine for me.

ToooOldForThis · 25/11/2022 20:34

Have you had covid? I've heard of that being a symptom?

KitchenFleur · 25/11/2022 20:35

I always smell cigarettes when I have a cold.

plinkplinkfizzer · 25/11/2022 20:37

I sometimes think my house is burning down , turns out it is dog farts .

Eixample · 25/11/2022 20:38

Migraine. But it’s cheese for me. For a former colleague it was dog poo.

Same as this.

Annoyingly i don't have a sense of smell at all, so can only ever smell phantom smells. Usually cigarettes or burning. Both turn into migraines.

tryingsomethingnew · 25/11/2022 20:40

Yes! Can get this late at night- check the house- open a window to look for smoke! Weird!

Same. And taste cigarettes. I don’t smoke & never have. Usually means I have a sinus infection.

nopenotplaying · 25/11/2022 20:44

Wasn't this a story line in cold feet years ago?

FlyingFlamingo · 25/11/2022 20:46

I get this occasionally, since the first time I had covid. It’s a burning, acrid smell for me.

bellac11 · 25/11/2022 20:47

Yes for many many years. I smell burning toast, cigarette smoke, bonfire smoke or other nasty smells, it comes and goes and sometimes can last for days

Sometimes its about a migraine, often its not

I also heard that it can be a precursor to a stroke so that petrifies me as well.

pepperminttaste · 25/11/2022 20:50

I had this after I had covid. Lasted for ages but it did eventually stop. And yes, lots of running round the house checking and double checking everything!

lurchermummy · 25/11/2022 20:52

I do and although there's a supposed link to having a brain tumour extensive googling has never proved to me that this is the case.

BeBesideTheSea · 25/11/2022 20:52

Yes, toast or bonfire smoke. Doctor said it was a migraine, even though I don’t get the pain

MissMarpleRocks · 25/11/2022 20:54

Had it for years so for me not to do with covid. I’ve had MRIs as well in case it’s a tumour as pp said. Thankfully not as I was worried as that what my dad died from.

bloodywhitecat · 25/11/2022 20:58

Mine random smell of burning out to be a benign tumour in my sinus.

ilovebagpuss · 25/11/2022 21:20

Mine is a random smell of washing powder, definitely not from clothes as I can smell it strongly sort of in my nose, and not when I smell my clothes. Very odd.

longtompot · 25/11/2022 21:24

Not usually but last week when I came home it smelt as if someone had just peeled an orange. That bright fresh zesty smell. But no one had! Not smelt it again since

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 25/11/2022 21:49

Since I had Covid, I go through phases of smelling fresh cigarette smoke. So strong as if someone is in the room smoking and it would make my eyes sting.

My Gp described them as Olfactory hallucinations.

superplumb · 26/11/2022 09:37

Yep fags and toast. Had it years. Do suffer migraines but I can't link the two because early migraine signs for me are wiggly lines in my eyes followed by pain, never smells.

mamabear715 · 26/11/2022 09:39

No, but I hear phantom doorbell ringing, or texts. Drives me nuts when it wakes me up & all is clear.. it happens to my sis, too. Sigh.

Brokenunicorn · 26/11/2022 09:39

Do get checked for brain tumour, unlikely.

gabsdot45 · 26/11/2022 10:18

I've recently had Covid and I smell cigarettes smoke constantly.
It's awful

nutellacrumpets · 26/11/2022 10:37

Yes. It's an olfactory hallucination. Or Phantosmia.

Mine was triggered by a cold virus and allergy years pre covid. Covid changed it slightly and could smell bleach. It was horrendous. It's intermittent.

I saw the ENT and he gave me some steroid nose drops. He referred me for an MRI which never materialised.

He told me to ensure I had a smoke alarm as you risk perception changes and a CO Monitor.

I use a nasal rinse (water pulse) that helps (a tiny bit) and fexofendien antihistamine and a steroid spray (flixonase?) think it helps.

It's worse in summe r

MyMilkshakeScaresAllTheBoys · 26/11/2022 11:58

I had this bad in pregnancy!
