Chemist refused to sell my Mother make up. How odd?

DM a bit deaf but all her facilities and aged 85 .

She wanted to buy her granddaughter (my DD2) a lipstick for her birthday. DM went to a local independent chemist. The sort that stinks of perfume the moment you walk in. She explained to the sales assistant ( who mum presumed was the owner or manager ) that she was looking for a colour to suit someone with blonde hair, fair skin tone.

Assistant replied sorry I know this sounds awkward but we only serve people who have bought a product before as its caused problems in the past.

So mum went to Boots with the exist same request and was helped , no problem. Except now she is over thinking it and worrying the lipstick could cause God knows what skin allergy.

Does this sound really odd? I wondered if first shop thought she was buying for a child. Dd2 is 20 years old btw. Or do you think its because make up choice so personal its highly likely its not to daughter’s taste. But why should that be of any concern to the shop, everyone should know make up can not be returned.

To me its a weird business model only to sale products your customers have had before. How is business growth achieved if nobody tries anything new.?

My local pharmacy only sells the kind of makeup popular 30+ years ago think frosted pink lipstick and blue eyeliner , maybe they just knew they don't sell anything a 20 year old is likely to want and your mum would be wasting her money

Furcoatandnoknickerz · 25/11/2022 15:42

@EvilRingahBitch report away love. It was perfectly safe for my poor cat . BTW she was PTS 7 years ago. Calm your shit.

Same with mine - they tend to sell Rimmel/Maybelline but it doesn't look new. They have stuff like Constance Carroll lip glosses (roll ons) which I recall in the 80s!

@NOTANUM @GonnaGetGoingReturns are we talking a little east of London Borough of Havering? TOWIE territory. We could be talking about the same chemist

I don't give a toss about your dead cat. But if you go around advising people to do things that could kill their living cats then yes, I get a bit cross about that.

HelloGooodBye · 25/11/2022 15:49

Your mum is a bit deaf as you said, perhaps she misheard?

Cakewineorgin · 25/11/2022 15:49

Please do not give Calpol to cats. Paracetamol is highly toxic to cats and many die needlessly every year due to being given it. Pain relief should always come from a vet. Metacam is known as cat crack in the industry. If you have ever had to administer it you will know why.

Nope this was in Newham, East London. Which is predominantly Asian or sort of half and half with East End old school types. Not a million miles from Havering though!

My friend was shocked as she'd bought tampons, sanitary towels etc from this chemist before and even KY Jelly. Basically, this chemist lost her custom including all her prescriptions from then on, she switched straight to Boots/Superdrug.

How can they sell you sometching they've sold "before" if they don't let you have a first time!

banananas1978 · 25/11/2022 15:52

Bizarre..its like cashier refusing to sell milk to a customer because its a common allergen lol

Beauty industry Grande Fromage here.
All companies take back returns.
In my day on the counters we were told to exchange without quibble.
Mrs Estee Lauder said a woman unhappy is no longer your customer.
Telephone
Television
Tell a woman!

Customers often say they have an allergy when they actually don't like the product. That is what costs the companies money as we have to independently test it for safety. My advice would be say it wasn't right on the customer. Be honest. If you are unsure buy from QVC they offer full returns.
Gifts are tricky but children's make up doesn't really exist. All cosmetics need to be non toxic in the UK. If a child eats a product it should do no lasting harm. However if it is off a market and from overseas I can't guarantee that.

Blondes can wear all colours, the skin undertone is the key. Blue/ pink cool shades-pink, Paris red, rosey beige nude. golden skin - peachy, tomato reds, caramel browns.
And I always used the Pretty Women video in my sales training back in the day!. Not very PC now but it illustrated the 'do not judge' principle.

My friend mentioned it to me at the time as she had a little girl and was separated from the baby's father but was dating again and the condom had split. She's Catholic but uses birth control. She did say to me she was surprised the actual vending pharmacist spoke to her, but said it was at lunchtime, so she presumed the assistant was on their lunch break. He didn't want to engage further apart from 'against my religion' and she didn't want to push it further either, in case she got angry (she was already stressed enough with it being something like 36 hours after she'd had sex) and apparently as I've googled it's legal for him to state this but she was appalled in case say a teenage girl wanted the MAP and couldn't have it and then maybe tried a DIY abortion or went on to have an unwanted baby.

Really?! This didn't used to be the case back in the olden days. I've written off many a foundation/lipstick etc which didn't suit me.

I had a silver Dior eye pencil which snapped after one use - £20 odd quid down the drain. Got a Maybelline tattoo one in silver which is much better. But I didn't know I could complain about or return the Dior one!

Frosted ink, you say?

<recalls carefree youth>

And this shop would be where? . . .

<wonders if frosted pink lipstick would make me look like a girl again in certain lights*>

Hi friend 🙋🏾‍♀️

Bestcatmum · 25/11/2022 16:02

Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'd have laughed out loud.

WendyWagon · 25/11/2022 16:03

@GonnaGetGoingReturns yep. Return it. Its the shops that don't want to do a refund not the suppliers. We all have clean up procedures. No one wants you to be unhappy. Millions are spent on social media for people to say nice things. A few returns are small fry.
Foundation should always go on your face when testing. Jaw line, then go outside to see how it looks.
Lauder do 'draming' samples.
I am using Mac water drops, fabulous.

I’m old. I would have had an incontinent ‘accident’ on the shop floor and left.

Are you saying you would have... shat on the floor? That's disgusting, and completely out of proportion as a reaction.

Thanks - worth a try then. Is it for items that don't suit or faulty or both? And do most beauty companies allow it or only a few?

It really doesn’t. You were poisoning your cat, they absolutely cannot have paracetamol and you are ridiculous to have done this.

Horses can have it, my horse had to have 60 paracetamol a day at one point (vet prescribed) but cats cannot. Please don’t ever give paracetamol to another cat.

MrsMontyD · 25/11/2022 16:08

I've taken foundation back if I'd bought it with the help of a trained member of staff and it hasn't suited me, it's far to expensive to write off. I'd also take anything back that I had a reaction to.

Funnily enough not all drugs are the same and not all animals are the same. Dogs can take antihistamines if you're careful. Cats cannot metabolise paracetamol. Hence I laid into you and not the other poster, because she wasn't giving out advice that could literally kill pets.

Yes I've reported you, and will report the personal attack as well, obviously.
