I read this devastating article. Famine, organ trafficking, child trafficking, child marriage, drugging children, extreme hunger, malnutrition and poverty

BBC news re Afghanistan

Just read the same after hearing about it on the radio. I know it's complicated and not due to one single thing, but I do kind of feel that the Western World is partly culpable. All the war and destabilisation. I mean, the Taliban should not be running the country! (no country should have a secular government), but I don't think there was much of an actual alternative?

I know countries can't just wade in to other countries and tell them how to run themselves, but I wish there was some kind of way to take over, get rid of the Taliban and set up a proper economy and state to support the people. There must be resources there to provide some wealth to build an economy. Foreign aid is only a short term solution, the whole country needs fixing. So many other countries with similar issues though. The inequality between those places and the Western world is disgusting, we're all humans and should all have the opportunity for quality of life. Resources should be shared and we should all work together.
If only.

I had the same thought OP. I feel helpless though I want to be able to help.

I also agree Op. Disgraceful that the west left them to those animals.

It’s horrific there is UNICEF but I’m not sure how any charity can make a meaningful impact when I imagine the needs of these children are so extreme.

if the Western Governments unfreeze assets there is the real possibility these funds would be siphoned off into the wrong hands. There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the Taliban that is there for the people. I can see why those who fled when they could did.

The taliban took over with ease. The people preferred them to the existing government who were corrupt. The ‘west’ tried to set up a proper government and army but culture eats strategy for breakfast and to go into a tribal society and think you can do that is just foolhardy. The greed and corruption of the Afghan government was a joke.
another awful thing was the reckless way in which the Biden administration handled the withdrawal creating such an unsafe situation for everyone involved.
for the rise and strength of the taliban I also blame Russia a lot for this. Their 10 year occupation really strengthened the taliban.
as for solutions I would like to see a coalition of neighbouring countries step up help for once.
