A good Winter film

I am not American but today is Thanksgiving and I love all that Fall (Autumn) seasonal nonsense. I have had a shit day so poured myself a whisky, lit some candles and fancy watching something seasona

I don’t want all out Christmas because in this house that doesn’t start until December. I caught the end of Sleepless in Seattle (for the 100th time) recently and after that sort of vibe.

When Harry Met Sally - a bit autumny!

A Hallmark film? Lots to choose from!

It's not a film but when I feel like that I watch Shtisel on Netflix for the hundredth time

Practical Magic - it's about witches and set in a gorgeous house (meant to be in Massachusetts I think) and gives off those cosy vibes - it's got a great soundtrack too.

When Harry Met Sally
You’ve Got Mail
The Holiday
Little Women
Bridget Jones’s Diary
Eight Below

Have you seen you've got mail? I prefer it to sleepless in Seattle!

Haha - great minds!

I echo You've Got Mail! Always a lovely autumn film 🙂

Whoputtheramintheramalamadingdong · 24/11/2022 20:29

Another lovely one is British film Peters Friends with Emma Thompson/kenneth branagh et al. It's set at new year in a lovely old country pile (Stephen fry's house in the movie)

Dead Poet's Society

The Winter Guest
Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow
Babette's Feast
Fargo
Groundhog Day
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

I don’t think I have seen You’ve got Mail, but I am familiar with the original. Dead Poets is another good shout.

Moonstruck - I love Cher

LeafHunter · 24/11/2022 20:52

My favourite is Stepmom. It’s sad but set in the autumn and has a lovely feel good feel.

While you were sleeping (though maybe a bit too christmassy for you)
Little women
Or just binge some Gilmore girls

Very different feel to all the others mentioned here, but The Lion in Winter is a cracking film.

Fargo ? 😂 I know you didn't say cosy film but shoving your wife in a wood chipper isn't exactly in the same vein as 'You've got mail'.....

No idea how I’ve never heard of that one - just watched the trailer, looks great! They all look so young.

OP asked for seasonal, not cosy....... Fargo's a brilliant film - Frances McDormand is superb in it. But then I class Die Hard as a Christmas film, so ignore me Grin

Bram Stoker's Dracula. If you accept some of the graphic scenes are deliberately over engineered, you focus on the underlying love story.

The Name of The Rose. For the historical ambience and scenery.

Cold Mountain.

I recall another film from about 10 or 15 years ago. It was set in Northern Europe and had some elements of modern industrial espionage (rather than cold war). There was much travel across autumnal and winter landscapes. Scandinavian style directing, arty shots etc. I remember vividly the slow silent skating of the couple on ice as they await their fate. Just cannot remember the film but it is sure deep in Winter.

Not much romance in there I must admit.
