I am visiting Scarborough in the week between Christmas and new year.
Staying at a hotel overnight.
Would like to have a wander while im there so any recommendations of some nice walks that wont need me to drive to them but if its really special then a short drive would be ok.
Ideally lovely scenery and old buildings if possible, not interested in the shops or amusement type places
Thank you!

Peasholm Park

Well depending on the weather its nice to walk along the sea front all the way round to North Bay. While you're there you're close to Peasholme Park which is a nice walk or somewhere to stop for coffee.

If you head out across the bridge near the old Grand Hotel you'll see some great Victorian & Edwardian architecture & some lovely sea views from the Esplanade.

A short drive up to Scalby or Ravenscar would put you in a nice position for some cliff top walks or you could follow the Cinder Track (old railway line) towards Whitby.

It really is all a bit weather dependent so fingers crossed for a nice clear day!

Iizzyb · 24/11/2022 20:44

Cloughton is lovely or a walk to Filey (on the cliff tops I think)

tootiredtospeak · 24/11/2022 20:45

You cant walk anywhere in Scaborough and get what you want you just cant sorry. I love this area but the best bit in Scarborough is maybe a visit to the castle. The views are immense up there. Otherwise its amusements and seaside shops.

mellongoose · 25/11/2022 06:26

Round the sea front from south bay to north bay and back.

Depending on the weather it will be lovely or....erm...bracing 🌊🐳

lovelilies · 25/11/2022 06:34

Cleveland way from Scalby Mills pub north up to Hayburn Wyke for lunch, then back along the cinder track

woods to walk in Broxa, Raincliff woods

The North bay is lovely for a stroll

Not sure if the art gallery and woodend are open then

lovelilies · 25/11/2022 06:36

The old town, the bolts on south bay is historical. The castle is an old ruin building

St Mary's church is nice and v old

Anotherguy · 25/11/2022 07:00

Have you been to Scarborough before? It’s an absolute dump of a town, ditto Bridlington and Whitby isn’t much better.

I don’t think you’ll find what you’re looking for in Scarborough tbh but good luck!

BirmaBrite · 25/11/2022 07:09

Bit harsh @Anotherguy .

A lot depends on the weather at that time of the year, if its bright and calm a walk would be lovely, if its chucking it down and blowing a gale, I know a lovely cafe Smile

I am very familiar with the area and tbh I toned down my opinion of it. It’s run down, tacky, expensive and I find the locals very narrow minded and ignorant. There are far, far nicer places to go to

Orangesare · 25/11/2022 07:21

The town centre isn’t a nice as it was but there some lovely parts. There are other shopping areas other than the town centre
Peasholme park
All along the front. Amusements are on South Bay and north bay is without traditional seaside stuff.
The gardens in the south cliff near the spa are lovely.
Cliff top walks.
Cleveland way
Olivers mount

I once went to Devon and was quite shocked that the seaside towns closed at 5pm in the middle of summer, no front with takeaways etc just incredibly quite. Give me the Yorkshire coast any day!

But it doesn't sound like the OP has a choice about going ?

KnotofAnxiety · 25/11/2022 22:19

Mmm plenty to have a look at...
Im visiting York and then planned to stay in Scarborough as thought a walk around there would be nice.. never been before but have been to whitby years ago.
I just hate that amusement arcade/gift shop thing and like to find the more rural/quieter side to places if i can.
Maybe the Yorkshire moors would be a better shout

I second Peasholm Park, the castle, and walking all the way around the seafront - North Bay has a lovely beach.

Go to St Martin-on-the-Hill, which is a gorgeous church, full of Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

Drive to Filey, which is a sweet little place, and not as run down as Scarborough.

Drive to Flamborough Head, for a bit of cliff-top drama.

Filey?

That's a nice place to walk around, nice beach and not many arcades.

lovelilies · 27/11/2022 04:03

@Anotherguy where do you live that gives you the confidence to say what a dump Scarborough is?

The town centre amd some parts of the sea front are run down, like most towns across the UK unfortunately.

The scenery is beautiful here though, not many places have forest, wolds, moors and beach so close together

Roystonv · 27/11/2022 04:26

What about The Rotunda (or something like that), little museum across from The Grand? Charming from what I remember but really very little of the type of thing you are looking for. ? Beverley or did you want the coast?

I get up in Scarborough. It's quite tacky and the main town is run down but the castle is nice and there are some nice walks slightly out of the town if you're prepared to drive.

Whitby is much nicer as a place (disagree with the previous poster who said it wasn't!) you can do nice walks on the cliff to Robin goods bay.

I would agree that staying inland in the moors would be a better idea. Quaint villages, nice pubs and lovely walks on the doorstep if you don't mind hills.

SeatonCarew · 27/11/2022 06:43

Peasholm Park is very nice and quite charming, look it up online OP.

SeatonCarew · 27/11/2022 06:45

On the South Bay the Spa snd the Italian Gardens are very pleasant with good views across the bay. Last time I was there they were spending several million on upgrading that area snd the clock tower.

I love in a remote village but York is probably the closest place. And in yorkshire everywhere has forests, wolds etc nearby! This isn’t about what’s near Scarborough, it’s about what sin Scarborough, and Scarborough is a dump. It’s run down, tatty, tacky, dirty, the natives are rough as dogs and the whole place just looks miserable.

veneture outside the town and yes there are nicer places but the same could be said of Damascus and Baghdad
