have you got heating on and if so, for how long?

my husband wants the heating to come on only when it drops to 18 degrees in the house. It's 19 currently and feels cold!
Are you all keeping heat off unless essential?
The bill is already rising steeply and we're not even in the really cold months yet. Our teenagers think that other families are just putting the heating on as normal. Is this true? Are you all putting the heating on as you normally would?

Not like we used to. It’s now set at 16 in the day but 12 at night

We've had ours on. We live in a pretty cold house. Even though the outside temp isn't yet that cold, it's been 13/14 without the heating and we've been edging it up to 15/16/17. I don't want to keep the heating off and then have trouble with damp and mould. Plus we both work from home and 13 feels very cold when you're sitting in front of the computer for 8 hours.

My OH thinks I am soft as I feel the cold but now I have read through and seen so many people keep their thermostats at 19-21 I feel pretty vindicated 😂

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/11/2022 17:01

I bought a small oil filled heater from Amazon and it was delivered today. I've placed it right next the sofa where I'm sitting and OMG bliss!! Feels like the first time I've been warm at home! I've only had it on for 15 mins so it'll be switched off again very shortly but it's really made a difference, including to my soul!!!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/11/2022 17:01

Our house is an new build and very well insulated so we’re only having it on for and hour in the morning and an hour before DS gets home from school and it’s maintaining it’s heat around 17-18 degrees which is surprisingly OK. Last year we had the thermostat set to 21, so a big difference but we’re managing.

Smsa123 · 23/11/2022 17:04

Thermostat set at 22. Dh had it on all night so wasn’t too happy about that

Flakjacketon · 23/11/2022 17:07

RosieRiveting · 23/11/2022 14:15

Ours is set to come on at 18 degrees. We've not been turning it up but I'd rather keep the house at a constant ok temp as it doesn't take much to warm it back up again from that point. I'd be worried about damp in some rooms if I didn't have it on.

We are doing the same for the same reason.

diamondpony80 · 23/11/2022 17:09

Our heating is on for a good portion of the day as there’s nearly always someone home. It goes on around 7am and off by about 10pm. I also switch it off if we’re out of the house for a few hours. I usually keep it around 20-21 degrees.

Redwineandroses · 23/11/2022 17:18

Mine hasn't been on yet (mid terrace house.) I've gotten used to the temperature as I certainly couldn't afford to put it on during the day (I started working from home in August this year) so I have a heated throw over my legs and a I put a dressing on when I'm not on a teams call.

My house came with a really old rubbish boiler which I lived with for 5 years before it died and replaced. So I'm used to the house being colder anyway. The new boiler heats the house great but I can't afford to have a huge bill so I'll stick with it being colder.

crimsonlake · 23/11/2022 17:51

I am one of those with a fireplace, but the price of logs and coal has almost doubled so a fire is now a treat. Unless people can source free logs I do not understand how they say, 'the heating is off but we are toastie with our wood burner on'
If I lit a fire about 5.30pm and kept it going through til bedtime I would go through a bag of logs and more or less the same with coal. So I am looking at around £14 an evening at least to heat one room.

Knittingnanny2 · 23/11/2022 17:56

Just had ours on for the first time this morning ( modern mid terrace, south facing, south coast) as it was a bit chilly first thing. We like it about 19’.

I was on grandchild collection from school this afternoon and realised it was time to get my proper winter coats out!
On another thread someone was asking about on/off etc. ours is on a timer and then managed by a thermostat but I haven’t got round to setting up the times yet so just doing on off as required.
boiler service next week and I got a list of questions to ask our friendly boiler man!

Yarrawonga · 23/11/2022 17:56

Nor me, even if they do get free logs. We get free trees but they don’t turn themselves into logs.

Immeltinnnnngggg · 23/11/2022 18:06

We have ours set for 1.5 hours early morning and then 2 in the evening.

We will put it on for another hour or so in the afternoon at weekends.

Trying not to to cut back too much because I don't want a damp and mouldy house.

Babyroobs · 23/11/2022 18:07

We don't have it on in the mornings as everyone is out of bed and off to work quite quickly. We have been having it on from around 6pm-10pm each evening as most of the kids are in bed by 10pm. However eldest ds and his gf are moving home shortly ( because their rented house heating is not working ! ) and I suspect there is going to be a lot of moaning and I'll probably feel obliged to put it on during the day a bit also if ds's gf is home. They will be contributing though so not so bad having it on more if lots of people are benefitting and the costs shared.

Crazy isn't it. We haven't used our log burner barely at all this winter for this reason.

Peteryougit · 23/11/2022 18:23

It’s set to come on for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening but it does fuck all in all honesty, there’s no point to it being on.

This house is freezing, no insulation (the epic rating is one too high to qualify for a grant in this area), shit old windows and doors

It doesn’t help that the kitchen long and is 1/3 of the downstairs space. We had the radiator taken off for some plastering, the buiders were supposed to come back the next day to put it back on but they have ghosted us for two months. The back door is rotten though, with a gap of about two inches in one place so it probably wouldn’t do much good with a radiator in there anyway.

We have an electric heater in the lounge to keep toddler dd warm and she co sleeps. Older kids wrap up warm for bed under 16 tog duvets.

The rest of the house is unbearably cold at times. I really wanted a cup of tea this afternoon but couldn’t muster the courage to go in that bitter kitchen!

Peteryougit · 23/11/2022 18:24

*epc not epic!

Puddywoodycat · 23/11/2022 18:33

@QuicheandMustard

Do you mean it's not plugged in anywhere? You can walk around freely?

Puddywoodycat · 23/11/2022 18:39

@OhYouBadBadKitten .. thanks for all your brilliant weather work you do on here.
💐💐 .

How much it to fit the thermostat? Is it a big job ?

WolvesOfTheCalla · 23/11/2022 18:40

6am-8am and 5pm-8pm here.

Along with the big dehumidifier being carted from downstairs to upstairs and back again.

I live in an old, single glazed cottage. It regularly drops to 14-15, and if I didn’t put the heating on, it would very quickly get very damp and mouldy.

HuntingoftheSnark · 23/11/2022 14:17

It was 8 degrees this morning and pretty cold. I haven't put the heating on yet - I really want to hold out as long as possible. I'll have it on for an hour a day when I cave in.

That's awful, I'm not sure it's good for your house to get that cold and definitely won't be good for you!!

WolvesOfTheCalla · 23/11/2022 18:45

DDs have fleece sheets/duvet cover (4tog duvet) and two other 4togs over the top. I can’t have fleece because dust mites. We all have hot water bottles. I’m WFH till January and I’ve got a stinking cold. It’s miserable.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/11/2022 18:49

I'm only putting the heating on in the evening and only to 20 degrees, definitely more mindful now because of the cost.

I live in a well insulated new build which doesn't get very cold very often.

My dd bought me an oversized hoody which is amazing for when I'm working from home.

superdupernova · 23/11/2022 18:51

We're putting the heating on as normal. We have a low mortgage for our earnings so although it's more expensive, we're not having to watch our spending. Ask me again in a few months when we've upsized and I bet the answer will be very very different.

QuicheandMustard · 23/11/2022 18:53

Puddywoodycat · 23/11/2022 18:33

@QuicheandMustard

Yes @Puddywoodycat you plug it into a battery pack and put the battery pack in the pocket. It's huge and fluffy and wonderful. I'm currently wearing it and even though there's no heating on, about to take it off as I'm getting too warm 😊

Aquivers · 23/11/2022 18:55

Personally 18/19/20 is not comfortable for me at all.

We aren't putting ours on like before - not just cos of money but I do think we all need to save energy ( and not pay Putin any more money than we absolutely have to).

Our thermostat is set to 23, but our house is very well insulated and so far it has been very mild. Put on for a couple of hours in morning and unless it's windy then we've been comfortable.
