Letterbox at bottom of door - why?

Justanotherusername30 · 23/11/2022 11:22

Can anyone explain the reason behind wanting/designing front doors with letter boxes at the bottom?

if you have one, why did you pick that?

(question comes after a conversation with a postie friend who finds them really inconvenient!)

Inept designers. Think they are being banned/have been banned. Shocking allowed to exist.

MelchiorsMistress · 23/11/2022 12:12

Could it be a security thing so that people couldn’t reach through and try to open the door?

Or maybe it’s in the hope that it will mean the postie has to use two hands to open the letter box and put the letters through rather than just forcing them through with one hand so everything ends up squashed.

Yarrawonga · 23/11/2022 12:14

We have one. We didn’t pick it, it was like that when we bought the house.

It actually makes sense because the front door is up some steps and higher than ground level.

CookedandDried · 23/11/2022 12:15

I have no idea why someone would do that? The only time a letterbox on the bottom of the door would be handy is if you were regularly being delivered long thin cakes? It could be to protect delicate packages but I'm sure most packages would be quite roughly handled before they got to the door - and need to be wrapped appropriately to cope with that?

Posties have a hard enough job without having to stoop to deliver letters. I hope they are being banned.

They used to be a thing years ago, usually if it was a full glass front door. Don't seem to see them much nowadays

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2022 12:19

I used to go out on a paper round with DS every now and again and there were a few of those. One low down one had a yappy type dog behind it and a very strong spring mechanism, lucky to have fingers left some weeks.

I think everyone should go out and test their letterboxes (whatever height) and see what the paper boys and posties are up against. Some were impossible to open at all.

Same situation here. That plus I think with all the glass in the door it's a structural thing. Hate it though

Same for us, if we had a normal height letterbox the post person would have to stand on the steps to post it through , whereas it’s much easier where it is.

Do paperboys still exist?

They do here. There's a weekly free paper and a newsagents that has paper rounds.

This made me snort 😂 long thin cakes hahaha

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2022 12:27

Imagine walking through my hall and a long thin cake emerging from the letterbox across the floor. I think you are onto something. Grin

Traybakes and brownies are delivered in long thin boxes. Am always disappointed though. Nothing worse than disappointing brownies.

Gower Cottage Brownies-they will not disappoint.

tanstaafl · 23/11/2022 12:34

Ours isn’t at the bottom but quite low.
we did umm and aah about its location but we liked the design with 3 sections on glass down the middle ( to let light into the hall ) so went ahead anyway.

sorry postie!

I saw some poor boy this morning, trudging last and getting drenched.

It brought back memories of me helping my sister with her paper round every day.

I will try, are they gooey? I make my own with no flour and they are shockingly gooey and delicious. The firm/ cake like texture brownie is just wrong.

smileandsing · 23/11/2022 12:38

We had one at a previous house. Made it easier for our Jack Russell to attack the letters!

As some one who has done some leaflet distribution via doors i question this - think we should be like the states and have the post box at the end of the drive - or at least in the middle of the door and obvious

I've sent a couple as gifts and even my very discerning picky friend was bowled over. That said, they're not the cheapest and if you make your own even they may not match up.

SkylightSkylight · 23/11/2022 12:39

I have been looking for a new front door and have really liked some of the designs with the letter box at the bottom.

However, I'm not a stupid, selfish, twat, so I wouldn't prioritise my design choice over a posties pain/discomfort!!

(totally different if you have front steps & this is better for the postie!)

I live in terraces who all have their letterboxes at the rear, I do feel sorry for the posties etc!
