Thanks for clicking ... i am currently part time in a clothes shop atm but due to weekend work, late nights and holidays I'm hoping to move jobs however I have no qualifications! So, basically I have been applying for a few different jobs and I have been offered a job ....... at a call centre! Now, while it's not ideal and I know call centres get bad rep apparently there is good scope for different opportunities and that's not to mention no weekends/ nights or bank holidays but Im terrified that I'll
Go and absolutely hate it, then my lovely wee shop job will be gone. But I also might love it and be so glad I've made the move! Please help me decide. I really want to do something else.

Ps I will say that while it's a call centre it seems to be a decent place to work from what I've heard on the grapevine.

I'm so lacking in confidence which never helps men

Anyone?

What sort of call centre? Cold calling / sales would be my idea of hell. But taking inbound calls from customers to help could be nice.

Elemenohpe · 22/11/2022 21:15

I've had quite a few jobs and call centre was the worst by far!

Is the pay better?

LeafHunter · 22/11/2022 21:17

I worked for BT for a while in a call centre and it was fine. People rung when they had issues rather than cold calling. I’d do it again if I was desperate.

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/11/2022 21:22

I don’t think it’s intrinsically bad, and if you’ve heard good things about it, it will probably be ok -

Presumably it’s customer service rather than cold selling double glazing?

It will help to get some more varied experiences both for your CV and so you start to have an idea of what you want to do to earn more money.

mindutopia · 22/11/2022 21:27

Personally I would stay with your retail job and either negotiate better hours or look for another job that suits you better. I can’t think of anything worse than a call centre.

zoolamcinty · 22/11/2022 21:34

It would be inbound calls customer service for a bank. It works out about £2 an hr better.

I really, really don't know what to do!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/11/2022 21:34

If it's a customer service centre that offers plenty of support and training, decent hours, a good rewards package, monthly bonus and opportunities to move into other roles (if you want to) then go for it! If it's a dead-end cold calling call centre, then don't.

Find out exactly what they're offering you and only make the move if you're happy with the package.

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 22/11/2022 21:34

can you do both for a few weeks?

Takingabreakagain · 22/11/2022 21:35

Is there anyway for you to do both? To try out the call centre on a few hours a week but keep your existing job for now

zoolamcinty · 22/11/2022 21:37

Every thing you read, hear seems terrible but my neighbours SD works for the same company in different branch and says she likes it and it's dead on etc. but what if she's lying to me 😩 I wish I hated my job or was made redundant then it would be a no brainer!

OP posts:
JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/11/2022 21:38

If the only difference is £2 extra an hour, I'm not sure it's the job for you. You're looking for a career, not a job. There are customer service centre roles that offer real career progression. Where do you live OP?

JLQ1020 · 22/11/2022 21:39

Go for it
Ex bank employee and honestly its a great job especially inbound calling.
It's hard going at busy times yes but you will lots of training and opportunities to progress and develop.

JLQ1020 · 22/11/2022 21:40

If its Santander or Halifax/ bank of scotland/ Lloyd's from personal experience and friends experience all very good places to work.
No experience of others.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/11/2022 21:40

I don't think your neighbours SD would lie to you... but what she considers to be the best job might not be what you consider to be the best job.

Angelofthenortheast · 22/11/2022 21:41

Yes go for it!! It's a way of moving into administrator or receptionist jobs which are quite easy going. When I moved from shop work to office work, I did two months of office temping through a recruitment agency .

I really recommend temping too - you basically don't have an interview as they're desperate, and you've really quickly got something office based to put on your cv

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/11/2022 21:42

Customer service centre roles at NFU Mutual are great. You get loads of training and support. And plenty of career progression if you want it.

LemonsAndCherries · 22/11/2022 21:46

Take it! As it's a bank, there will be training and quite likely opportunities to move to other roles. And it's more money too which over month will add up.

zoolamcinty · 22/11/2022 22:03

@JLQ1020 yes you're on the same wave length. It's not one of those but it's a big bank with 'excellent' training and opportunities once you're in and settled!!! Tell me more - I feel you can advise me well

OP posts:
zoolamcinty · 22/11/2022 22:07

Thanks everyone!!! It's with a major bank and apparently has won award as having been a great place to work and providing excellent training. Apparently there are people working there years that enjoy it and don't want to progress. Does this sound better?

ChateauMargaux · 22/11/2022 22:09
  • You can always find another shop job based on your experience.
  • You have been offered the call centre job so this gives you a chance to improve your CV and see if you like it.
  • It is more money and the hours are better.
  • Nothing ventured ....
swirlypinky · 22/11/2022 22:11

Call centre is a step
Upwards from shop floor

It's a stepping stone into an office job

Do it!

HBZ287 · 22/11/2022 22:15

Yes! Do it! Sounds perfect.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 22/11/2022 22:17

It’s not really about what other people think, it’s about what you like and what will suit you!

I started in a similar sounding admin role years ago and it was a great stepping stone into other roles in the same company, much better paid and more interesting! It sounds like your job opportunity could be similar, but do you like the idea of going into that kind of world?

If you stayed in the shop, are there progression opportunities?

What do you want to do in your personal life (house, car, holidays etc?) How much do you want to earn one day to do all of that and which route will get you there?

What do you love doing and which route is closest to that?
