Those who have fires, what coal do you burn?

Our usual coal merchant stopped selling the one we usually got (Ovoids - smokeless) and this year we got 3 sacks of something called Newburn and it's absolutely crap. Usually with Ovoids the stove can make most of the house warm but this Newburn stuff was a massive waste of £90, unless you stand directly in front of the stove there is just no heat in it whatsoever, even with two fans on top. DH has asked me to find a better one but I don't know where to even ask or look!

i don’t have a coal fire anymore, but when I did - ovoids for the win. I’d hit up google/garden centres near you. Nothing burns like it!

Threadkillacilla · 22/11/2022 09:21

Only thing we found better than ovoids is traditional coal. You'd be amazed how much difference it makes but we can't buy it, very occasionally we got it as surplus from commercial orders but can't but it for residential use here.

We used to use traditional coal too, but it's hard to get hold of now. Less and less merchants are selling it. Ours is running out and they aren't planning on restocking it!

I guess I'll have to search for Ovoids again then!

We live in a pit area and three houses still get a coal pension, it's like a lottery win when the delivery is real coal 😀

Gatekeeper · 22/11/2022 09:38

I used to get Burnwell smokeless ovoids but the price has shot up. Last year was paying £7 for 25 kg bag and its now £15.50! Ive started buying anthracite nuts instead at £12 a bag and that chucks out some heat once it gets going

Whatadisgrace · 22/11/2022 09:40

We use Supertherm smokeless fuel. It's the best we've tried, although I've never seen Ovoids. Perhaps we're missing out 😆

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/11/2022 09:43

Home fire smokeless. Have a pallet delivered once a year.

EcoCustard · 22/11/2022 10:15

We used to use Burnwell ovoids but they are very expensive and difficult to get them now from our usual supplier. We are using wood still primarily.

miceonabranch · 22/11/2022 10:16

We burn HouseFuel smokeless ovals. It's not the cheapest, but it burns slowly and consistently. It does leave a fair bit of ash.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 22/11/2022 10:37

Our neighbours burn coal. It means that we need to close all the windows and switch off the extractor fans when they light up and we can't dry washing outside. It makes the house smell and exacerbates DH's asthma, he gets a really tight chest. I'll be over the moon when normal coal is no longer available.

Threadkillacilla · 22/11/2022 10:47

Ime smokeless ovoids smell more. And they leave loads of concrete dust behind. Coal seems to burn hotter and burn up.

Janedoe82 · 22/11/2022 10:50

We use Coyles ovoids- very good. Sometimes also use ordinary coal but need to be careful in a multifuel as it burns through the grate!!
Also see if you can get turf!! Smells amazing, cheap and great as a top up.

www.nutsnbolts.uk/products/30kg-irish-fire-peat-burning-turf-fuel-natural-hand-cut-turves-log-peat-heat
this sort of turf. We can buy it locally as opposed to having it delivered.
We start off with wee sticks/ couple of blocks and then a shovel of coal. Then use turf the rest of the night.

I gotta say, at first glance it looks like bags/boxes full of big turds 🤣
