Does this exist?

I've got cancer, ADHD and thyroid disease and I need to do more exercise but struggle due to fatigue, exercise intolerance and boredom. I've been going out walking but don't want to risk going out when it's icy so I'm going to get a running/walking machine. It would really help if I could feel I was walking around interesting places though rather than just my living room. Can you buy any sort of virtual headset that hooks up to the machine so you can walk around and explore places? And if something like that does exist, how much would it cost - is there a price range? I don't have a lot of money as I'm spending so much on private medical care (given up on the NHS - doubt I'd have cancer if they'd taken my other problems seriously over the last 30 years).

You can buy any virtual reality headset and buy games on it. There are a few pretty cool dance ones that will give you a decent workout and most games now are set up in a way that you need to move and explore. I'm sure there are other mild exercise ones, too! But I have to warn you, you need a dedicated room for this - those games demand space for you to move!

Sorry that you're going through the mill OP and hope you're on the road to recovery Flowers

I imagine with VR that walking isn't quite what you're imagining yet as they're designed more for people with little space who can't move around that much, but am interested to see if someone says otherwise.

Have you tried watching YouTube walking city tours while you walk? I do that on the tv sometimes and again it's not quite perfect yet but works.

I also find it more fun to bounce, walk or jog on a mini trampoline than on a treadmill, it's really good exercise too.

Oh sorry, I don't think that uses VR, unless it's changed.

I don't have a room other than my living room unfortunately which is quite big but has furniture that's going to be hard to move. Not sure I can handle dancing but the virtual walking tours sound like a good bet. It would be ideal if they were linked to my movements on a treadmill but it might just be enough to stick on a video. I can certainly try it! Doubt I'd last long with a mini trampoline but who knows. I could maybe try it although I think I'd get too tired.

I found that at first I could barely do 5 straight minutes on the trampoline at first. But even just standing on it and sort of bouncing without jumping helped to strengthen my muscles.

These days I could easily jog for an hour and honestly, the thing that turned it round for me was the trampoline, because it felt fun and it wasn't scary when I felt a bit breathless.

i haven’t got one, but isn’t this what those v.expensive Peloton exercise bikes do so well? You can cycle through the andes etc. i wonder if they do a walking version?

midgetastic · 22/11/2022 17:43

You will need to try out VR headset first

Many people Experience motion sickness ( which with cancer treatment could be nasty )

Women more than men due to the design of the headsets ( bigger heads on men , eyes further apart on average , headsets designed for males default)

Cross trainers are more fun than a treadmill, you can go slow on them.
Pop something infront of the TV and hook it up to you tube?
