Would you want to live on the Moon (for a month or so)

The Artemis missions have begun. Currently orbiting around the Moon. The aim is to have a space station orbiting around the Moon and habitable pods on the Moon. So you take a space rocket to the space station and then there's a lander to take you to the Moon. And back.

There's a plan to have a vehicle on the Moon so you can drive. 12 miles per day.

Would you be tempted?

I would love to. I've always wanted to go into space.

Unfortunately they aren't advertising for old, fat astronauts!

@FindingMeno "........ there's children starving while we piss about in space..."

I fully agree with you.

@FindingMeno "........ there's children starving while we piss about in space..."

I fully agree with you.

That's always been the argument against space travel.

One of the arguments for space exploration is the technological advances that space exploration produces for society.

Plus 'because it's there' .

I think it would be amazing to see the Universe, to see the Earth from a totally different perspective,

But they would have to get the engineering right. Because you can't just fix things easily when you are out there.

There must be nicer places to stay with decent food and not shitting in a tube if you want a break from the kids.

7Worfs · 22/11/2022 08:32

I mean you can use that (very poor) argument for anything - why build aeroplanes if there are people starving.

Absolutely but I get where they're coming from. I do find if really hard to swallow when I see these mega-billionaires indulging in the space race.

And indulgence is what it is.

They could do incredible, unheard of things with their enormous wealth so to see them choose to plough their money into something which serves only to glorify them is hard to stomach.

reddingweddy · 22/11/2022 08:50

Nah, there's not a lot to do once you're there

I think planes and worldwide transport have their place, once which has enabled help for starving countries. Going into space is a different game altogether. Wasteful and unnecessary while earth has so much need.

Giggorata · 22/11/2022 09:42

Yes, if I wasn't too old, infirm, etc.

One day, the domes of the Moon will be desirable holiday resorts and possibly retirement/health centres. Just think what that 1/6 gravity would be like for elderly or disabled people.
On a similar note, any further exploration of space would be a lot easier from launch sites on the Moon than from the deep gravity well of the Earth.

You could argue that we shouldn't spend on space exploration, or on any other huge projects, like artificial islands, tunnels, bridges, or more cars, planes, fashion, nuclear weapons or whatever that prevents money or relief going to poor and starving people on Earth.
But it's not lack of money or food; it's the lack of will to address it systematically by governments, big business and ultimately, us. Stopping land grabs and cash crops and deforestation, accepting less affluent lifestyles, giving up artificially cheap food and goods, etc. Going beyond apportioning some conscience money to charities or relief organisations.

If humanity is to survive, we need to develop space exploration. We need to spread out the billions of people beyond our exhausted planet and let it recover a bit, mine the asteroids for resources, boldly go, and all that.
One day, our sun will turn into a red giant and engulf Earth. I'd like to think we have found somewhere safe before that.

Peteryougit · 22/11/2022 10:08

Absolutely.

I mean, yes, there is the worry of something blowing up or going wrong. But I would rather die that way than die slowly of a horrible disease, that’s they way I see it.

Yup, that’s my application fucked on those grounds too!

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/11/2022 11:24

It would be a good break from DP. So yes, I'm in!

HumphreysCorner · 22/11/2022 22:06

Oh absolutely, missed out on being an astronaut as I'm fat and not fit but love the chance of space travel.

XenoBitch · 22/11/2022 22:07

Wasn't there some mission to Mars thing that was meant to be a one way trip. I would so sign up for anything that would take me away from this dump.

TellMeWhere · 22/11/2022 22:13

I think the lack of "sky" and well, anything on the horizon would freak me out. And the journey. Too much nothing... I'd be worried about floating off into the abyss.

Candymay · 20/04/2023 20:16

Yes I’d love the chance. Peace and quiet from family and great fun. As long as there was plenty of food I’d jump at the chance to go.

LilyDivine · 26/04/2023 22:54

No, I don't like change so leaving Earth would be too much for me.

Catsmere · 27/04/2023 04:18

Absolutely nowhere to go, nothing to do, stuck inside with men (I’m reminded of the level of sexual harassment and worse that goes on in the Antarctic stations) - what an awful idea. That’s on top of what PP have already said about the environmental costs, the pointlessness of it all, the woeful priorities in doing such things, etc, etc.
