Children coughing and ill already

I expect them to get ill over the winter but I'm suprised at just how quick it has come on. 2/3 are coughing in the night despite sleeping in onsies a duvet and a fluffy blanket.

How do I know if its a bug or if its related to the weather?

All of mine (including 10 week old) had an awful bad cough recently. I did notice while out and about that lots and lots of children had similar. Two of mine ended up on antibiotics consequently.

Keep an eye on it, I’ve heard of lots of children developing more serious symptoms.

mynameiscalypso · 21/11/2022 18:37

How would it be related to the weather?! There are so many bugs going round at the moment. Most people I know with small children have had a constant stream over the last 2 months since schools went back.

I think immunity has been affected (especially in young children) because of the repeated lockdowns over the last few years. Meaning they didn’t build up necessary immunity they normally do. So we’re in for a rough few years. RSV is bad this year with more young children ending up in hospital than normal.

The lack for flu for the last few years has also meant less immunity in the population. Australia has had a bad flu season and we normally follow them. A good year to get the flu jab.

CourtneeLuv · 21/11/2022 19:04

The cold doesn't make you ill.

endofthelinefinally · 21/11/2022 19:06

It is bronchiolitis season. I think it will be worse this year because of repeated lock down and low immunity.

BadTeethBoy · 21/11/2022 19:18

Both of mine have it. They both manage much better when cooler rather than warm

SavingKitten · 21/11/2022 19:19

Totally normal for this time of year

BogRollBOGOF · 21/11/2022 19:22

DS has had two stay-off-school-ill colds and a milder one in the middle. Part of it's probably going up to a significantly larger secondary school, and the stress of that. Part of it could be that having had a lot of hot weather this year, he spent more time indoors over the summer than usual as he struggles with heat and could be depleted in vitamin D.

He's normally pretty hardy but every few years, something comes along and hits him and makes him susceptible to more viruses for a while.

TreacsPotNoodle · 21/11/2022 19:24

My 2.5 year old son has had tonsillitis, hand food and mouth and a cold already since end of September🫣🫣

I dread winter knowing it's going to be illness after illness for 6 months straight.

ILIWYS · 21/11/2022 19:34

Teen DD has had cough and cold on and off (more on than off) since beginning of October. Multiple negative Covid tests. May be something to do with lack of immunity.

Ozgirl75 · 21/11/2022 19:40

I’m in Australia and we’ve just come out of winter and it was a brutal one for coughs and colds as well as flu and rsv and of course covid. Even my older kids who don’t normally get things now both had at least three colds each.
Equally, over the past two years they haven’t had a single thing because of lockdowns, mask wearing and hand washing, so I figured they’d just saved them all up and got them in one winter.
We’re all currently getting over another cold, mine so bad it’s turned into a sinus infection.
It’ll pass, I just gave mine probiotics, plenty of fruit and veg and sleep but I’m not sure it made that much difference, you just have to ride it out really.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 21/11/2022 19:47

Yes we have had an ill child every weekend since the beginning of October. Either vomiting bugs or coughs/colds. DS's asthma is always set off by the cold air too. Just waiting to catch something myself now.

WolvesOfTheCalla · 21/11/2022 19:51

It wasn’t just Covid that was kept at bay with masks, distancing and ventilations. It was all the other shitty infections too. Buckle up, it’s gonna be a long winter.

AriettyHomily · 21/11/2022 20:15

I've got bronchitis at the moment, it's the time of year.

Delatron · 21/11/2022 20:39

It might be the time of year but it does appear to be worse than normal. For reasons outlined above. It’s going to be like this for a while.

Shesasuperfreak · 21/11/2022 23:02

Yes, its started quicker than normal. They are 7 and 11 and dont really get ill but I have had a child home from school at least one day for the past 4 weeks.

At first they had a vomiting bug and now its a cough which is scary to hear at night.

Today I tried the vapor rub foot thing that I read on here and was suprised that it worked in their sleep 😅. So will be continuing with that now.

My 12 year old has a cough and general weakness/High temperature .

He's given it to me

The headache I get from coughing so much is horrid. Praying my younger two don't get it.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 21/11/2022 23:09

I’m normally as tough as old boots when it comes to colds and flu but I’ve been floored by a bug DS brought home. He normally rarely gets ill too but this last bug was a doily. He’s recovered after about a week but I’m still coughing up a gold watch every five minutes. Not great for those of us with wonky pelvic floors 😀.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 21/11/2022 23:10

not doily, a doozy 😀
