Anyone else’s teeth gone to pieces since having kids?

I always thought it was an old wives tale but since having my 2 dc (now 14 and 17) the health of my teeth has slowly been getting worse and worse.
I had dc in my early 30’s, before that I had great teeth with one filling. Over the last 10 or so years my teeth have literally been breaking away.
I now have about 5 fillings, several root canals and crowns and had to have two teeth removed (still saving up for dentures!).
Today, I was eating a small piece of very soft pasta and felt an almighty crunch and a whole chunk of filling has fallen out, I now I have a huge gaping hole. Getting a dental appointment in my area is like winning the lottery.
I am sure my dc must have leached something from my body!
My dh is the same age as me and has consumed way more sweets, sugary drinks and alcohol than me over the years yet has perfect teeth.
Has anyone else found this has happened after having kids?

Yep. After giving my birth I now have irreversible gum disease. I’m absolutely gutted. I never had teeth or gum problems before and now I’ve got terrible gums and at risk of losing my teeth. It’s awful :(

Me! 2 kids and my teeth have gone to shit. Lost one so far and and two molars at the back are shells of teeth held together by temporary filings and hope.

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 21/11/2022 12:48

I’m glad it’s not just me.
I am so embarrassed when I go to the dentist, I have always been so careful with my dental health/hygiene but it looks like I spend my days bathing my teeth in sugar!

It's a recognised side effect of pregnancy. When I had children in the 80's you had free dental treatment on the NHS during pregnancy and a year after the birth. I had some fillings in my front teeth during that year. No idea if they still do that now.

LondonQueen · 21/11/2022 12:56

Mine have definitely got worse after children, I've ended up grinding them on a night as well which is one of the worst things you can do.

Still true....except for those who were pregnant in the pandemic and missed that benefit. 😐

My MIL lost all her teeth Three children close together. My dentist said babies in the womb rob so much from women. I had three now have crowns, bridges and implants. It's grim

beachcomber70 · 21/11/2022 13:05

Mine have been worse since I had my children, definitely. It was noticeable. The babies obviously needed the minerals/whatever to develop properly and so of course I was then depleted.
I had to have a series of fillings in the years following, have had extractions since and now I'm older they are chipping. It's a slow process but still concerning.

Likewise! I've had very healthy gums pre pregnancy , very regular check up and good oral hygiene. 6 years post and I have been diagnosed with gum disease- I cried my eyes off when I initially found out ! It is awful !*

GoodMorningMissBliss · 21/11/2022 13:09

Same here. I had a tooth break (whilst eating quiche!) after the birth of my first DC, had it filled, but it was a bad job and I got an absess underneath it so I had to have it removed. I've since had another DC and have had to have more fillings, cracks fixed and teeth removed than ever before. I go to the dentist every 6 months and they always say that my dental hygiene is great, teeth very clean etc, it's just that my teeth are not strong anymore. I also think having fixed braces on for 5 years as a teenager hasn't helped, but before DC I had minimal work done, now its every time I go to the dentist.

Flowerfairy101 · 21/11/2022 13:12

My gums weren't great pre pregnancy as I had years of uneven teeth before getting braces but post pregnancy it seems like theyre just shooting back from my teeth at an alarming rate. Also just noticed my enamel is just wearing away, I have ridges in the surfaces of my front 6 teeth and they're discoloured. I have always been for my check ups, drink minimal fizz, always cleaned my teeth twice a day, used mouthwash, waterpik, I don't understand it. My partner hasn't been near a dentist in almost 20 years and pays far less attention to oral hygiene and his teeth and gums are fine. Its so depressing Sad I do think its partly genetics in my case though.

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 21/11/2022 13:12

I do the same LondonQueen which is obviously not helping.

Mine are crumbling like oxo cubes since pregnancy. Honestly feels like they've lost their life source and are just rotting out of mu mouth. They 'look' fine but I know they are severely damaged.

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 21/11/2022 13:14

Isn’t it so annoying Flowerfairy101, my husbands teeth are near perfect and he never looks after them in the way I look after mine 🙁

Yes, my teeth turned to mush. Its a standing joke that one of my teeth broke when eating a jaffa cake Blush

They started to improve when I started on Vit D supplements as you need Vit D to help absorb calcium.

Flowerfairy101 · 21/11/2022 13:19

@RedorangeyellowBLACK I know! This is why I think its partly genetics. His family all have pretty good teeth despite ageing, having children etc. I'm looking at having some bonding done to try and shore up my enamel.

Witchofthedales · 21/11/2022 13:31

Absolutely! And just like in your situation my husband really doesn't look after his teeth yet has no problems, me, on the other hand, goes to extremes but I'm still breaking / losing teeth! 😫 💐

mongoosebaby · 21/11/2022 13:34

Yes, mine are awful since baby no 2, made much worse by lack of dentists during pregnancy and post partum because of covid, much like a PP. I have joked that my teeth wouldn't survive another pregnancy so no baby no 3 for us (light hearted as we don't really want another)

TruckDriving · 21/11/2022 13:45

Yes!!!! Mine are awful since having my 2yo! I have had 3 fillings and a poorly fitted crown which I'm bracing myself will need a root canal soon. I don't drink soft drinks or eat added sugar so it's definitely baby connected!!

I wish I knew how I could get them better. I also wish I could afford private dental care!

Pearfacebanana · 21/11/2022 22:25

Literally sat here feeling the pain from my root canal. I agree.
