Cracked tongue!

Frostflower · 21/11/2022 10:09

I tried to find the health board but couldn't. Feel free to move it, Mumsnet!

I have a 9 month old who wakes up a lot, so I'm quite sleep deprived. I'm breastfeeding regularly too. Last night my tongue seemed a bit sore so I checked it out and it was full of big cracks!

Any ideas what this is a sign of and how can I repair it? I'm assuming I'm very run down and deficient in something.

I'm a prolific water drinker but often have 2 coffees a day. Any ideas for supplements, diet or smoothies etc?

Thank you!

In rare cases, malnutrition can cause cracked tongue. A different study from 2016 found a link between cracked tongue and vitamin B12 deficiency.

Meanwhile, research from 2015 indicates that pain associated with cracked tongue may stem from deficiencies in:

B vitamins
zinc
iron

Have you always had it? I’ve always had it and never really knew it was bad until I saw another post! Nothing wrong, it’s just a natural thing

No! My tongue definitely looks different.

This makes sense: my iron levels go up and down. Thank you.

I used to get this and I found that taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement sorts it and stops it from recurring. There are plenty around which contain 100% of the recommended daily amounts of key minerals. For cracked tongue I believe zinc is a key factor - so eating foods which are naturally high in zinc can also help.

I have been lax in taking my vits! Will get zinc into me too.

I take a medication that can block the absorption of B12 and I found that I was getting weird smooth patches and some painless cracks on my tongue. I now use a spray B12 supplement by Better You as well as a multi vitamin and mineral tablet.
