Anyone else get a GP appointment just fine?

I lived somewhere about 20 miles away 18 months ago. Easy to get an appointment, it was always a telephone consultation but then the Dr would ask you to come in straight away if they wanted to see you

I now live here and I just call at 8am, and get through after ringing for a few minutes

Appointment can be either telecons or face to face, as the patient you can choose what works best for you. I think the surgery got a lot of feedback that telecons wasn't right for a lot of people

Anyway, my point being, I can't be the only person with this easy to access GP service?

I know the same can't be said for other surgeries in the country. My nan for example can get an appointment for 6 weeks?! In advanced sometimes but that's it. Unless they phone her and want to arrange something because a hospital letter says they should etc

My mum is in SE Essex and can't get anything at all. She can never ever get through and you can't turn up at the surgery to book on the morning either

Yes always been able to get an face to face appointment when needed. As I understand it its more of a struggle to get a routine appointment for an ongoing condition, unless it's just a blood test or something.

hugznotdrugz · 21/11/2022 08:25

Yup I've had no problems- but I think I'm flagged as high risk due to psych and some other things

hosyyy · 21/11/2022 08:25

Scotland and I have always managed fine. I don't know if that's maybe just really lucky but I've had 5 recent GP visits, same thing I've been given a telephone app and if needed to be seen which I was I was asked to come down to the surgery.

We now email in our problem and you get rung within w working days. DH got rung same day, I got rung the next day. I think it works well.

CMOTDibbler · 21/11/2022 08:26

Ours is great - you fill in the online form, say what you would like to happen and then they text you an appointment (phone or in person) or arrange a prescription or whatever. Very efficient

Swampthing55 · 21/11/2022 08:27

Yes everyone same day service. Booking ahead is not allowed which seems weird. They say come back in a week but you still have to phone on the day

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/11/2022 08:28

Ours is great, always has been although I think we are probably in a quite desirable part of the country which helps with recruitment.

Brieeeeeeeee · 21/11/2022 08:29

Yes, always fine. The phone queue at 8.30am is a bit rubbish and makes me late for work, but once you’re speaking to someone I’ve always been able to speak to or see them as quickly as I need to. Large city suburb, a fair few social problems and elderly population - surprising!

Minimochi · 21/11/2022 08:29

I rang up at 8.30am today and got an appointment to go in at 10.30am. It's usually no problem at all. We don't live in the UK, though.

Hidingawaytoday · 21/11/2022 08:29

Yes, they use E-consult so you fill out a form online, a dr will triage then they get back to you/book you an appointment in order of priority - never not spoken/seen a dr within an appropriate timescale when needed. You can still call for an on the day appointment if necessary.

Yes, ours has this same day system too. It’s a bit nonsensical for booking smears, medication reviews etc!

Littlefish · 21/11/2022 08:31

My GP surgery is great.

You can generally choose between a face to face appointment or phone consultation. Same day for urgent, within 2-3 days for less urgent.

Children almost always seen the same day.

I realise how lucky I am.

FearofQueefing · 21/11/2022 08:33

You can get a same day appointment at mine provided you ring between 8am and 8:30. After 8:30 everything is usually gone. (Although once managed to get a couple of late appointments in exceptional circumstances - baby with very high temp etc.)

It's definitely got harder of late. Our local A&E service is utterly utterly broken so increasingly people are using the GP for stuff that normally would be an A&E thing.

Boooooot · 21/11/2022 08:34

No it’s appalling where I am. All the health services are. I’m looking into going private but with pre existing health conditions i won’t get insured.

newtb · 21/11/2022 08:34

Always been able to get appointments right through covid. Not always the same day. In France.

Willmafrockfit · 21/11/2022 08:34

i avoid mondays and fridays
and touch wood, get some sort of contact

atronger · 21/11/2022 08:35

I got invited for a ' general health check' by tax last week Grin I'm a healthy 24 year old but it's apparently an annual check they do? Who knew!

DH recently phoned for an emergency appointment and he was seen that day. While at the appointment he asked about another problem which is ongoing and really needs to be dealt with, but was shut down as the reason for his original appointment has been dealt with.

Hea since phoned for an appointment for the other issue and it's a three week wait.

He hasn't been to Dr for 10+ years, I'm more like seven, so not sure what's normal around here.

Chomolungma · 21/11/2022 08:37

Yes, it's fine here. Some appointments are done by phone now (which is more efficient and frees up time), but it's no problem to arrange a face to face one if you need to.

Travelplans · 21/11/2022 08:40

Yep, we have a great surgery. Once you complete the econsult form, they call you within hours and if needed you usually can be seen within the hour.

Before we moved house though we lived in an area where they were building housing development after development and there was no investment in the infrastructure. The docs were overwhelmed and we're actually put into special measures.

nannybeach · 21/11/2022 08:42

Roughly where do you live poster? Awful here SE,UK. I have a condition was told must be seen, because it can become malignant,I waited 5 weeks for a phone appointment with nurse, then called in... panic stations, emergency cancer pathway appointment in 3 working days! DH was rushed to hospital a couple of weeks ago,had a nurse appointment following that, results showing he needs to see DR, she went to room,8.30, DR not in,he now has a PHONE APPOINTMENT with the GP in 2 months!!!!

nannybeach · 21/11/2022 08:43

There is actually a sign on our GPs door saying that they are accepting new patients!!!

Maybeandfive · 21/11/2022 08:44

if you say it’s urgent you can. Otherwise two week wait ( last time I called which was quite a few months ago).

upfucked · 21/11/2022 08:46

3 week wait for my 6 year old when I rang last week. I could have got one earlier at the ‘hub’ but when I’ve done that before they said you need to see your own GP to be referred I think she needs a referral.
