Looking into getting a kindle as I love reading.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what kindle to get?
And is kindle unlimited worth it?

I have an older kindle, I don't think they still make it.
If it ever breaks I'll get a basic one with a backlight.
I don't want another device to waste time on the internet, spend enough time doing that on my phone.
I do use it and have the Kindle app on my phone, they sync so you can swap over devices if it doesn't suit to bring a Kindle somewhere.
Equally if you know you'll need entertaining the Kindle battery lasts days-week so can use that for a journey/long day waiting around somewhere and save your phone battery.
I have Amazon prime and get kindle unlimited with that.
I do use it although it takes a lot of wading through the dross!
If your a reader I think they are brilliant, I still have real books and enjoy bookshops but the Kindle is so light and you can stock up on great bargains if you keep an eye on the sales so you always have something you want to read.

I have a backlit one and I love it! Wasn't expensive and I didn't need anything with apps or anything on it because I have an iPad. I love the way it works in the sun, the iPad is useless but the kindle is amazing! I have unlimited and really enjoy it as loads of books are free. You can have up to 10 in your library at a time. They normally have deals on so you could try it and see if you like it. I love my kindle, I used to cart big books around and now I have about 100 in my bag at a time and it's really small! I would recommend the paper white if they still make it. No need to spend £100s as the cheaper ones are great! You won't regret it!

I have one and love it - it’s one of the few items of technology that would be an instant replacement if it broke.

I’ve got the kindle fire 7” but only because I can then have the Libby/overdrive app so I can borrow ebooks from the local library as well as using kindle unlimited.

it has saved me a fortune in actually buying books.

My paperwhite is the biz, I've had it for 6 years now and still going strong with daily use.

I love my paperwhite. I would recommend unlimited too. There is normally an offer on so I have yet to pay the full monthly amount after 3 years of having it.

All the specs are here.

They've changed the range a little since I bought mine, but I see that the Paperwhite is on a Black Friday offer of £95, which is only £10 more than the cheapest one and it's waterproof and the lighting is probably better.

Don't worry about the lower storage amount, even 8 Gb is enough for hundreds of books. I'd also say you don't need internet access, wifi is fine.

As for whether kindle unlimited is worth it, I'd say probably not, unless you read a lot. Most books aren't on there and the ones that are, are usually quite cheap anyway, eg £1-2, so you'd need to read more than 1-2 a week to make it worth paying £8 a month. But there's lots of offers to get it free or at a big discount, so look out for one of those and see if it suits you.

Just bear in mind that anything with Fire in the name is a tablet - this means you will be able to do more on it than just read books but it doesn’t have the special e-ink technology so it will be harder on your eyes when reading for long periods and you won’t be able to use it in sunlight.

The specialist e-readers are the ones that don’t have Fire in the name. They’re not tablets so you can only read on them but they’re much better for your eyes as it’s just like reading a page. Even the backlit ones aren’t the same as a tablet screen.

I have the paperwhite which is backlit and I love it.

For me kindle unlimited isn’t worth paying for as there’s not much on there I actually want to read - I just get the free trials every now and then and make the most of it before the charges kick in then I cancel. Despite what a pp said Kindle Unlimited isn’t included with prime - however there is
prime reading which is a bit different although a lot of the books do overlap between prime reading and KU.

Go for a paperwhite. Ideal to read in the dark, gentle to the eyes and holds a huge number of books. Battery life is also good. No problem reading outside in the sun or shade. You can play around with font sizes and different fonts to choose what's best for you.

I have a kindle for 9 years now and it's the one thing I would always replace immediately.

I avoid a table as they are larger so the whole convenience of a small item for reading in bed and carrying around is gone. Also the screen is like your normal table or phone, glares in sunlight and strains the eyes.

I have the kindle app on my phone and it holds the whole library but you need digital data to actually access the book unless you downloaded it already. But still good if you are stuck somewhere unexpected. Also a normal phone screen is a bit small to read. But the kindle app drains the phone battery very quickly I found, so not really a solution for each day in my opinion.

I upgraded to a paper white when I gave DD my basic one when she was going on holiday. I love it. I read in the bath a lot.

mrstea301 · 21/11/2022 08:56

I've just bought my DH a paper white in the Black Friday deal from Amazon, as an upgrade to the basic kindle. Great for the price, 8gb is a good amount of storage and the ads only appear on the Lock Screen, they're not obtrusive at all. I have the kindle oasis and I love it!

I read in the sunshine a lot, so for me paperwhite is the way to go - you can use the tablet app indoors or in evenings if you want (or for colour screens if you have illustrations). I've been a Kindle reader for many years now (had one of the very earliest ones, and curretly on my third) and wouldn't give them up now. Didn't think I'd feel this way when I got my first but....

There's usually deals for kindle unlimited when you buy one (just be careful to ensure you know when the cancellation date is). I tried it with my latest one for 3 months but canclled at the end of the free period. It confirmed my expectations - there was very little on it that I would read (or hadn't already read if I would read it, if you see what I mean). But I think it's an "each to their own thing" - you need to try it and see what it does for you, but for me there wasn't anything much I wanted to read.
