Feeling off after birth normal? Should I be worried?

Had a c section on 12th November. I feel off. Temperature ok, blood loss has been fine, only one instance of hifh blood pressure and the rest fine, drinking and eating mostly ok etc. But I just feel mildly sick all the time and achy and with headaches that come and go, usually behind one eye.

is this just normal? I mentioned it before I left hospital and they said I was fine..

I know nobody here can say and to speak to midwife etc etc but I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar as I’m so fed up!

It could be from the spinal block

HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed · 20/11/2022 12:05

I don't know about the other stuff but I had bad headaches on and off for a month or so after both births of mine. I think they were hormonal. But also it sounds a bit like you might have a low-level infection somewhere. I would try phoning NHS Direct or whatever they're called now and trying to get some antibiotics.

@upfucked that was over a week ahi now though? Xx

@HerReputationMadeItDifficultToProceed i thought this but temperature is 37 so suggests not? I’m just fed up

@mmhak are you breast feeding? I only ask because for the first week/10 days I felt horrible. Dizzy, sick, hot flushes, shaky etc I also had a section but I think it was due to breast feeding. There's a thread on here about it as well. Congrats on your new arrival and hope you feel better soon xx

@OrangeSmartiesTasteDifferent yes and now I think of it I started to feel worse when milk came in around day 5. I have started to move to bottle as I felt off when feeding. Perhaps it’s related to that.

The anesthetist warned me I might have all those symptoms as side effects. I think she said there was also the possibility of it lasting for months.

So, yes, anesthetic is the most likely cause but you could call 111 as well.

The spinal block can cause a post dural headache, did they mention that to you?

I had a c section on 7/11 and developed a post dural headache this time, it's only just started to fade now. It started about 4 days after I gave birth.

Caffeine and lying down should help ease the headache if it is that.

Otherwise try to keep really hydrated and hopefully whatever it is will pass soon enough.
Congratulations on your new baby Flowers

Are you taking painkillers? The opiates made me feel sick.

mmhak · 20/11/2022 12:32

@SirMingeALot iron and a painkiller beginning with d?!

dihydrocodeine? that can make you feel nauseous (or even vomit) and frequent use of opioids can cause headaches. If you can manage without it, try that

@QuiteSomeTime yes that’s it. Had it everyday more than once for nearly two weeks, started feeling like this 5 days in. I might try without now… thank you

Everyone is different but 8 days post section I wasn't really in too much pain any more. It did burn when I turned over but honestly preferred that to the opiates. I'm no doctor but that was my experience.

mmhak · 20/11/2022 12:40

@SirMingeALot i am not sure how I would be without them as I’ve not tried. But I reckon would be fine now as I’m walking around and doing normal stuff apart from feeling generally rubbish!

With both of my c sections I was sent home and told to just take ibuprofen 600mg and paracetamol. Other painkillers definitely make you feel out of sorts imo
