Favourite meat for a roast?

Inspired by another threat in which lots of people seem to have pork joints for dinner today

What's your go to meat/protein for a roast or Sunday lunch?

My household never has pork, none of us like it, we will either have chicken or lamb
I'm curious to know what others are having, I know a few people who have fish, a colleague of mine has salmon with baby potatoes every Sunday, his version of a Sunday roast

Would also be interesting to know if vegans have a good version of a Sunday roast

Game.

I love them all but if pushed would probably say lamb is my favourite. We don't have it at home much as it's expensive and DH isn't bothered. Chicken probably next, then beef, then pork. But basically if it's good quality fee range meat, cooked well, I'm never going to be disappointed!

My daughter is vegetarian so we only have vegetarian roast dinners.
Half the time we don't bother adding a specific alternative to meet, wr just have everything else and don't it dosen't feel like anythings missing.
Bit when we feel like it we have quorn pieces, cooked with lots of herbs and lemon and we have it all with the red bisto gravy. The quorn tastes pretty good like that, we both like strong flavours and things that cover the 'feety' smell that plain quorn has. She is not a fan of any of the vegetarian things that usually go with roast dinners like nut roast etc but this way is nice and we've done it for years.

My favourite roast is roast potatoes (goose fat, parboiled first).

Rolled rib of beef from my favourite butcher (only have beef rib on the bone if feeding plenty of us). But you really do have to have a decent bit of beef for a roast. Quite like pheasant.

My go to is pork shoulder as I can just put it in the oven on low for several hours and get on with my day. The next go to is chicken. Today we have a lamb leg as dh went shopping. It's been a while since I've cooked one so need to read up on it. I know I usually make small holes with a knife and put in slivers of garlic with some fresh rosemary but for the life of me I can't remember how long to cook it for.

Always beef brisket cooked long and slow so it falls apart and melts in the mouth.

If it is a treat eg a returning DC or similar then a really good beef joint. For normal weekends I often roast a chicken and might do 'all the trimmings' or just gravy, mashed potatoes and a green vegetable. We don't tend to get a lot of leftovers but there should be enough for lunch the next day. and there will be the stock.DH loves pork but I find getting it 'right' a bit stressful so it is a rare purchase here. I was brought up with lamb being the regular meat joint and I love it but one family member isn't keen and as it is expensive and seasonal it would tend to be an occasional treat when we would all be present so it has fallen off the rotation somewhat. Having said all the above, apart from chicken we probably only have a roast a few times a year.

Beef but the rest of the family aren’t so keen.

In order of preference:

Beef
Pork
Chicken
Turkey
Gammon
Pork

We rarely have roasts though, only a couple of times a year apart from Christmas.

chosenone · 20/11/2022 10:44

I love beef but is I so rarely get it right at home. I’ve done ok with a salmon cut of Beef and I do cheaper cuts/brisket in the slow cooker. Chicken easy but we have a lot in the week. Pork is cheap and cheerful just don’t overlook it so it’s tender. Never have Lamb at home due to the price so often have it when eating out. We have a Roast ban from now onwards so that Xmas dinner is a treat so we go to Toad in the Hole/ Cottage Poe and Stew.

sneezums · 20/11/2022 10:47

Gammon is our favourite but will also have chicken, pork, a casserole or toad in the hole sometimes.

DooNotAsISay · 20/11/2022 10:53

Lamb or beef, personally, but DC prefer pork or chicken, so we do them on a rotation. Occasionally we also have duck.
