How important is Twitter?

Is it likely to go tits up and disappear? And if it does, does it matter?

i go on Twitter quite a lot, mostly to follow a few accounts linked to subjects I’m interested in (politics, news, climate change, science, old buildings, travel). I rarely post. ATM there is a lot of hand wringing and concern that ‘something should be done’ to preserve what Twitter provides - but I’m not sure what that is and how important it is?

Is Twitter important to you?

I'd be happy to see the back of it. Meaningless drivel.

Yup.

I hate twitter. It's basically an echo chamber and people are so black and white in terms of opinions. There is no nuanced debate or grey areas just slogans and abuse. It's a cesspool.

That may be somewhat true for mass follower / news / celebrity accounts however there is plenty of nuanced debate, useful information and reference within niche areas
I follow lots of stuff for work which is fab for discussion on the best ways to do conservation repairs or the best ways to incorporate sustainable tech & design or retrofit in different circumstances correctly. In a fast developing industry this is fab because it allows people to connect over what is and isn't working in different situations.
There is quite healthy debate on what's the best way to measure stuff and very few people within the industry claim that theirs is the only answer. Lots of us find it a particularly good way to share and evaluate data across a wide experience of not just professionals but end users.
You can avoid the cess pool aspects of it.
