Insuring a 17 yo onyour own car

Dd is 17 soon.

Do I use my current insurance and add her or do I ring round different companies.

Any recommendations for young drivers as a named driver?

No idea how it all works??

Cheers

I started a separate insurance- through Marmalade. They were very good.
It seemed easier than changing our own insurance.

Do you mean for additional driving practice? I used a marmalade also, they are really helpful.

HeddaGarbled · 19/11/2022 23:39

First thing to do is to ask your current insurers how much it would cost to add her to your current policy.

Unless this is outrageous, I wouldn’t bother changing insurance companies mid-term: you don’t get a pro-rata refund for cancelling early.

Renewal is the time to shop around.

I didn’t know about Marmalade. It’s certainly worth getting a quote and then comparing it with the cost of adding her to your existing policy.

Depends who will be the main user of the car. If it's still you, with her having a few practice sessions, add her to your policy.

If it will become "her" car,ie she is the main user, she should have her own policy.

Anything else is called fronting, which is bad

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 20/11/2022 09:33

It's my car. She will
Just go out with her dad to practice. Will try the marmalade people and my own insurance . Thank you

We've usually gotten temporary insurance with other providers rather than fanny about with our own insurance.
We've taken it out for days, weeks, months etc. and there are some good, specialist insurance products with good offers and savings here and there.

Get a price through your insurance, but also try additional insurance companies that might work out cheaper

MuttsNutts · 20/11/2022 09:49

If it’s just for extra practice I think you’ll be surprised how little it will cost to add her to your own insurance. I added DS to the insurance for my sporty Mini Cooper and was amazed how cheap it was, presumably because he would never be driving unaccompanied.

Different story once he passed his test though.
