Really keen to hear some positive encouraging stories about how you 'bettered' yourself and how long it took you. What does your life look like now compared to how it did?

I'm trying to get out of my retail job. Have an interview in 2weeks for a banking job that I'd love to get so that I can maybe go down a different pathway in life.

Tell me your stories 😘

@Greennetting and @NextPrimeMinister thanks for explaining. I guess you go on the basis that the bright ones in a call centre will want to move on anyway and so this is a win-win for both the employee and the employer. As a manager, it must be satisfying to reward your best people and be able to offer them an opportunity to move on and up in the organisation.

Left school at 16 and went to work in a clothes shop. Then low level
admin work before training as a nurse. Did A levels part time and got in to Oxford to read law. Had a successful career as a barrister and twenty five years after my graduation I’m a judge. I would never have put money on me getting a degree never mind an Oxbridge degree. I’m in my 50s now and determined to keep reaching. It’s never too late.

Left school at 18, having done fuck all sixth form work and therefore failed all my A Levels. I already had a place at a decent nursing school but a stint as a chambermaid that summer made me realise vomit and I were never going to be compatible.

Spent the next 5 years in various catering jobs (having a brilliant time!) until I happened to see an ad for trainee mortgage brokers in Hotel and Catering magazine. Applied and it turned out I was rather good at it. Became the top advisor in London for several years then chucked it all in, moved to Dublin and did it all over again. Love working with people, love solving problems. Retired at 43. Now retrained in therapy and still enjoying every day.
