Best tags for daughter?

Soooo someone just tried to lure our 2yo away at the playground. My husband will be more vigilant now but I also want to buy tags. I have an iphone and DH a samsung. What are the best tags for us to buy? What are your experiences with using a tag to always be able to check on your childs wherabouts?

I take it you’ve reported this to the police? I wouldn’t tag a 2 year old. Best thing is to supervise them properly

MermaidEyes · 19/11/2022 10:45

I have no idea how you'd tag a 2 year old, but I agree that at that age your eyes should never be off them when out anywhere. Not just because of other people, but because they themselves might have an accident or run off.

user1471518104 · 19/11/2022 10:45

Apple airtag and use family settings on iPhone. Your husband won't be able to use it.

There are other ways to tag but way more
Expensive. And echo above. No child that old should be so far away from you where you can't get to them immediately

Sorry, that sounded critical. It isn’t meant to be. I know it only takes a minute, and I’ve lost mine in shops when they were smaller. I just can’t imagine tagging a toddler

BobbyBobbyBobby · 19/11/2022 11:10

Your eyes. No need to tag a child if you are being responsible and seeing where they are at all times and are within easy reach of them.

Reins are useful.

I don't think many people will be able to answer your question as most simply check their 2 year olds using their eyes.

I find the idea that someone was able to try and lure your 2 year old away quite bizarre.

The range is only 10m for most Bluetooth tags.
Its not going to track a snatched toddler if that’s what you’re thinking.
They shouldn’t have been in a situation to even be lured away.
I was always within arms length from them until school age (5), and after that was within the 10m and actively watching them (not reading, not on my phone, not chatting….watching them).

Floralnomad · 19/11/2022 11:24

A tag is not the answer .

apple AirTags will. They only need to be within range of any phone or device, not just yours.

they’ll track lost luggage etc. So theoretically could track a toddler- a key ring attached to a belt loop for example.

Well, neither is divorcing, because then he'll have her more, so what should I do? I can't stop her father from taking her to the playground. He has rights. Yes, I've had a stern talk with him but that's all I can do.

Any compatible phone or device that has its Bluetooth switched on. Most people I know do not walk around with their Bluetooth constantly on for security reasons.

GristleToesAndWhine · 19/11/2022 11:28

Report it to the police.

Not 'just' to record a crime but also to demonstrate to her father just how bloody serious an event this is.

Floralnomad · 19/11/2022 11:30

I didn’t suggest divorcing him , but I’m going to make a massive assumption that he’s not watching her because he’s on his phone - there is little else to do in a kiddies playground , so getting something that encourages him to rely on his phone more is not the go to answer . The answer is to sit him down with a documentary about James Bulgar and show him what can happen when you take your eyes off them for a second .

They track lost luggage because an airport will have a whole Bluetooth zone covering the geographical area through several 24/7 Bluetooth beacons.

So unless your toddler is snatched in an airport and not taken away from the airport, you can’t track them like a lost piece of luggage.

Most outdoor places like a playground don’t have Bluetooth beacons. A few high tech indoor shopping centres might, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

user1471518104 · 19/11/2022 12:05

Sorry but that complete bollocks. Airports don't have Bluetooth whatsoever. People's personal phones do. The Bluetooth on Apple devices now have 50 metre plus range. Even at low levels. And when you 'disable'. Bluetooth you are only entering low power mode. Critical things like find my phone etc will remain on. To completely block that you need to edit location settings in phone menu

Onnabugeisha · 19/11/2022 12:27

@user1471518104
Airports do have Bluetooth. What are you on about?
www.mokoblue.com/bluetooth-ibeacon-in-airport/

And the “advertised range” isn’t the 100% everything tracked range.

And “find my” uses primarily the iCloud to track items, not Bluetooth. The device must be signed into iCloud using mobile data on for the airtagged item to be tracked and the airtagged item must be within Bluetooth distance of any iOS device that is also signed into the iCloud (not offline) and has their Bluetooth on.

Comedycook · 19/11/2022 12:33

Terrifying. At two, never ever take your eyes off them. I hope the police have been told.

formulatingAresponse · 19/11/2022 12:41

He needs to get off his phone and watch her or actually play and engage with her

This. You cannot outsource supervising a child to a tech solution, I think this would mean he’d think he can get away with supervising the child LESS closely, not more

JudgeRindersMinder · 19/11/2022 12:49

Amd I’m willing to bet he wasn’t supervising appropriately because he was glued to a phone screen!

pilates · 19/11/2022 12:54

Have you reported to police?

LaLaLouella · 19/11/2022 12:58

I find this bizarre - who tried to lure away your toddler at a playground? Who told you what happened? Your DH? What exactly did he say, what was he doing at the time? Did anyone else witness it and react? What stopped it happening?

If it's true that a stranger intentionally tried to snatch your child then the police need to be informed.

Toddlers need to be supervised at all times, putting an Apple tag on her wont keep her safe if the adult she's with is useless.

He called me on the phone to come NOW to take over dd because he wanted to run after the man. There was nobody else in the playground. He was clearly very shaken about it and I have no reason to doubt him.

@user1471518104

So, thinking I could explain better. When you disable Bluetooth on your phone, you are in fact disabling it on your phone. It’s not going into ‘low power mode’.

If you’ve lost the AirTagged item within Bluetooth range and you are the only iOS device nearby, you do need your Bluetooth enabled to locate its exact location.

But if the Airtagged item is outside Bluetooth range of your phone or you have disabled Bluetooth, you are not using the Bluetooth on your phone to track it at all. Your end of the tracking uses iCloud:

Your Phone=iCloud=Some other iOS device= that devices Bluetooth= AirTag=Item

Ocampa · 19/11/2022 13:04

I agree the the police need to be informed but DH saw him, I didn't, so he'll have to do the reporting. We're not talking about it now because we're staying calm because DD is still awake.
