Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - plot hole?

LightGreenDot · 19/11/2022 08:51

Spoiler alert, just in case anyone needs it.

I'm a bit late to the party but have read the Harry Potter books and now working my way through the films.

In Goblet of Fire, why does Crouch jnr go to the effort of putting Harry through the Tri-wizard tournament and helping him win (which was not even guaranteed to succeed)? He could have made anything into a portkey and got Harry to touch it with so much less effort. Or am I missing something???

Don't pick holes in a book about a boy wizard at a school for witches and wizards.

00100001 · 19/11/2022 08:54

Well, it's a kids book, and not a documentary, so we have to suspend our belief a bit.

But it was to make it look like an accident, apparently, make it look like Harry had died as part of the tournament. It would be more "believable" if he got through the tournament and died.
Also Voldemort didn't want a witness, Harry was supposed to die. No-one was supposed to know he had been reborn apart from his DEs.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 19/11/2022 08:54

I believe the answer is- because so many people die during the tournament 🤷‍♀️ But the first egg could have been a portkey... maybe because the maze was hidden- what a rubbish spectator sport. Same for under the lake- no one could
see but nothing to portkey

Portkeys don't work in hogwarts or grounds usually. Enchantment was only lifted for final task (idea was winner would be transported back out maze to judges)

PuttingDownRoots · 19/11/2022 08:55

They were trying to make his death look like an accident.

But the whole series, although brilliant, is full of holes. You need to suspend logical thought.

00100001 · 19/11/2022 08:56

The biggest "plot hole" in the book is absolutely no body realised Moody wasn't who he said he was for 9+ months!

Imagine trying to impersonate, even your twin, for that long!

Yeah, the tournament was lame as a spectator, except for the dragons.
And god knows why quidditch was cancelled, (yes, i know why really ,JK hated writing it etc) but literally could be said that Competitors couldn't be in Quidditch team.

i love how poor Moody has basically no personality thereafter. The Moody we met in book 4 didn't exist. It would have been so easy to just keep that character going but she didn't take the lazy route- she kind of dropped him. Tonks was the new "insider" for the OofP and ministry. There was a distance with Moody.

Also how did they have a quidditch league when only 28 kids played at school level - and it's not age controlled so not even a new 28 kids each year. They had slim pickings to fill an entire league. It would have been shocking really if Wood Didn't get a spot considering he was the only graduate in 3 years, with only 4 more in the next 3 years. (From Gryffindor)

LightGreenDot · 19/11/2022 09:04

Thanks all, I am willing to suspend disbelief somewhat and I see there were reasons it needed to be a bit more convoluted so I feel better now!

We only see a minor part of Hogwarts remember...

I also thought it was weird how Harry carried on the relationship with real Moody that he started with fake Moody, as if it hadn't been a completely different person.

It’s a McGuffin. Once I was told about Mcguffins you see them everywhere. It ruins most films 😁

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 19/11/2022 09:40

@PuttingDownRoots do you think there's more teams though? There weren't even try outs the first few years. And wouldn't Ron have tried out for other teams if they had them?

TheTantrumoftheToddlerIsThere · 19/11/2022 09:48

There are magical enchantments around Hogwarts to stop people from apparating or unlawfully gaining entry into the grounds. I think we’re meant to assume it applies to portkeys too (unless authorised by the Ministry and Dumbledore). The enchantments were lifted at specific times throughout the tournament and they took advantage of this?

Allschoolsareartschools · 19/11/2022 09:48

That's my favourite out of all the Harry Potter books with a shocking but brilliant ending leading into the more serious later books.
I remember being disappointed with the film though, I'd imagined it to be so amazing but I don't think it could live up to my expectations really!

We could presume that quidditch works like football in the Muggle world, quidditch clubs/summer camps/scouts etc. I know alad who doesn't play for his school team but is on a youth team for a named in etc

There weren't tryouts that we know of...

Quidditch was cancelled because they grew the maze on the quidditch pitch.

burnoutbabe · 19/11/2022 09:54

Wouldn't sone of the boys played football? I am sure a few people mention supporting muggle teams?

But hey they don't appear to need to know maths or English or science or even languages! But fleur must have been taught English at her school!

The films I've watched so far have missed out so much, and you don't get to know any of the peripheral characters who then pop up seemingly out of nowhere. I guess that's just the nature of book vs film.

I don’t understand why Dumbledore would let Harry enter the competition at all. He needed to keep Harry alive as the best chance of defeating Voldemort and knew the competition was a risk, so why it just say he’s underage so no, not happening.

TangoTarantella · 19/11/2022 09:57

*why not just say
