Just wondering what MNers think about this. Bold or selfish decision to conceive two children whilst awaiting serious fraud charges that mean you could be away from your children, in this case for 11 years?

I just listened to the podcast mentioned by another poster and they said because it's a federal jail and because the judge stayed well in sentencing guidelines there won't be parole. Wonder if that's definitely true...

Wiccan · 19/11/2022 14:14

No sympathy for this narcissistic selfish fraudulent lying pathetic excuse for a human being , has had kids purely for sympathy and an attempt to get a lesser sentence.

Neither bold nor selfish.

Having listened to all of the "Dropout" podcast, her getting pregnant was entirely calculated and a move to garner sympathy with the jury/judge.

I think that Federal prisoners in the US have to serve at least 85% of a sentence so she is still looking at 9 years. It was a selfish choice but if she is 38 I can see why she did it. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a sociopath, she seems to have this grandiose sense of self and seems to think she will save humanity somehow, but can’t admit that she doesn’t have the actual ability to do it.

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 14:29

Having watched the tv programme about her, she lives in Lala land. Definitely narcissistic/sociopath/something …. Honestly just thinks she is so above everyone and everything. I think she genuinely thought she’d never get jailed because it’s “her”. Well thank goodness she has been. She’s been laughing in everyone’s faces, living a life of luxury and freedom when she owes billions. I think she is one sick individual and calculated and knew exactly what she was doing. No sympathy from me. Completely selfish and self obsessed

miceonabranch · 19/11/2022 14:34

At least she won't be actually raising her children and interacting with them on a day to day basis. Perhaps her husband will meet someone else and divorce her.

I have a feeling they are not legally married, I don’t think a marriage has ever been confirmed. He is very wealthy and whilst I do not know how creditors work in America it seems sensible to not marry her if he wants to keep his wealth.

Whitewolf2 · 19/11/2022 15:50

It’s very sad for the children who don’t deserve the pain I’m sure it will cause them. She appears to be a sociopath though so probably doesn’t care.

She's 38 now, and would have been 36 or 37 when her first child was born. Facing a long prison sentence in your late 30s, it's a now or never decision whether to have children.

This.

I always think it’s kind of weird that a man or a woman who commit a crime and get jailed in their thirties are treated exactly the same in sentencing, when for the woman the sentence is time in prison plus also the punishment that she will never have genetic children of her own, but for the man it is just jail time.

Eh it’s all bloody sad.

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 16:26

Well she could have had kids earlier if she wasn’t so obsessed with getting rich by screwing suck people over. She was free to make the choice whether to have kids or not between the ages of 20 and 36 or whenever it was she got arrested. After that she wasn’t free to do what she wanted because she had committed a huge crime! So she gets pregnant by a relatively new bf. Well done her 🙄. And now it’s not just her that gets punished but her poor kids too

You don't get a get out of jail free card because you may lose the ability to have kids. Boo hoo. If they really cared about having kids, they wouldn't commit crimes in the first place.

GoldenGorilla · 19/11/2022 08:22

To be fair, she knew that length of sentence would be likely and she probably won’t be able to have kids by the time she gets out (she’s 38 now).

So I do think it will be difficult for the family, but I might have done the same in that situation, people will go to great lengths to have kids regardless of the circumstances.

Here's a thought, its a radical one, but how about if people want kids, they simply don't commit crimes?

teezletangler · 19/11/2022 16:59

The interesting thing is that men do this all the time and no one bats an eyelid. US prisons are full of men whose partners are pregnant. Julian Assange fathered two children while under warrant for his arrest. But the thought of children growing up with a mother in prison does feel different and much more significant.

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 17:06

Well I think the point is she thought she would just get house arrest because of it

I would highly recommend reading the book by the journalist who first revealed the fraud in the Wall Street Journal - it’s called Bad Blood and it reads like a thriller. Some of her behaviour in the book is utterly chilling. They didn’t even touch on some of it in the TV series because you couldn’t have fit it all in.

Holmes is an absolute sociopath - she hired people to follow/spy on the journalist and his sources (one of whom was George Schultz’s grandson, Tyler). She tried to get the WSJ story shut down by Rupert Murdoch - one of her investors, who also owns the paper - multiple times and to his utter credit he refused, meaning he lost hundreds of millions of dollars. George Schultz’s son gave a victim impact statement in which he said his son Tyler slept with a knife under his pillow because he was terrified she’d put a hit on him.

She knowingly allowed cancer patients and other patients with serious illnesses to get the wrong test results because her product didn’t work. And she defrauded people out of millions.

I can absolutely believe she got pregnant to try and get reduced jail time. I don’t know what her husband was thinking even starting a relationship with her in the first place. I believe he’s pretty rich and is funding all her fancy lawyers too. She deserved to have had the book thrown at her.

(As a side note, apparently Leighton Meester (Blair in Gossip Girl) was born while her mother was in prison, can’t remember what for.)

I didn't know about the book, I have just ordered it, this will be my Christmas read 😂I can't wait. Thank you!

Oh boo boo. This selfish woman has put her wants over her kids needs. Selfish, selfish, selfish.

She should have been jailed for longer for her disgusting scam.

I saw the headline this morning but didn’t read the article, I didn’t know she was pregnant.

To me, it was a bold attempt at avoiding jail that hasn’t worked.

In this case, I’d think you are right

There are laws in the US to prevent convicted criminals from profiting from their crimes in this way. Otherwise every serial killer could sell their story for salacious movies and become rich.

There may be ways a fleet of skilled lawyers could work around it, but she can't just sell her story for money. I think convicted criminals may even legally forfeit the right to their own "story".

That's interesting. I wonder how Jordan Belfort got away with it, didn't he write the book that Wolf of Wallstreet was based on? Unless after you have served your time it's allowed?

Not exactly the same but OJ Simpson put loads of businesses & assets in his DCs names so he didn't have to pay when he lost the civil case.

lljkk · 19/11/2022 18:02

Apparently she'll be out in ~3 years with good behaviour. She probably won't go in until at least 2024, either (after series of appeals are exhausted).

Daily Beast article on her sentencing.

Farmageddon · 19/11/2022 18:02

Just started listening to the podcast today (thanks to whoever recommended it). I have also ordered the book Bad Blood.

Her voice is really distinctive, I wonder if that is put on or something to make her sound older, have more gravitas?

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 18:05

she famously puts her voice on. It’s hilarious

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 18:07

She’s going to take the piss. Her entry to prison will be delayed and delayed as pp said and she will continue to laugh and live a lavish life full of holidays posting all over social media. The photos make me sick
