Film at Uni

DD is in Y11. Riddled with anxiety, she thinks she's the only one who doesn't know what to do in life, what options to take for A levels, what job to do, etc etc.

We try to reassure her that she doesn't need to worry about this just yet, and that even having to select A levels now doesn't mean it's a done deal and there's time to change her mind.

In any case, she has recently started looking at potential university courses which I think it's a good thing to get her motivated. She seems drawn to an undergraduate Film + MFL course. The film part of it would be a new thing in her life I think. Or maybe not. She's always enjoyed drawing animations on her ipad and has been a good story teller, but she detests English and will drop it after GCSE.

I am keen to support this new possibility as it will give DD a much needed direction, even if it changes completely along the way. I'd be grateful to hear from those in the know if there's anything I can do to help her solidify this interest, bearing in mind I know nothing about this field and it's a new thing for her. For example, are there any particular gadgets that would make good Christmas presents? She has to do work experience after GCSEs: what type of companies could she approach? Any other advice/suggestions would be gratefully welcome!

My daughter took this course in Manchester, though I'm not sure whether it exists now as that was a while ago. Her course was film theory though, just as you might study English literature. A practical filmmaking course would be very different. Her course was absolutely fantastic. It's really worthwhile having a good look at all the universities to see what's on offer. Best of luck to her!

My nephew is doing a year of a foundation course at Bournemouth. Might this be a good avenue for her? A lot of the universities like kids who do foundation courses in Arts subjects. He wasn't sure which Art course he wanted to do. He is absolutely loving it, never seen him so happy!

He's focusing on the film one too btw. Good luck to her!

I work in media but did not study it at uni/college. It’s great industry - pros and cons like everything else. Lots of options for careers - Screenskills website is useful for giving idea of variety of jobs. Worth looking at BBC Academy website too.

Would urge her to watch TV and film (if she isn’t doing so already) - all sorts and genres. Think about stories - fiction and non-fiction -matter. Think about what she likes / what interests her.

Lot of resources and opportunities - there’s been a push across UK to encourage people into the business. Worth having a google. For example careers.channel4.com/4skills

That link references work experience.

Contact screen agency in your area - they will have contacts for production companies so she can email asking about work experience. Agencies may also have schemes.
Good luck

When she chooses her A levels, please encourage her to choose based on interest subjects, rather than future degree ideas.

Agree with screenskills website.
She may also want to be an extra if possible

And here are some more links for you/your DD
