Bad breath

Hope54321 · 18/11/2022 21:53

I have good oral hygiene overall. I brush with an electric toothbrush and floss twice a day and also use a tongue scraper, but I still have bad breath. I’ve always had bad breath since childhood. I visit the hygienist every 6 months and have my teeth cleaned professionally.

I do have acid reflux and an impacted wisdom tooth at the moment.

If anyone has experienced this horrible situation, how did your treat your bad breath?

Iron deficiency ruled out?

Lacking in iron can give you a metallic taste and or breath.

Gargling with salt water is good for gums in case it’s lingering bacteria that is causing bad breath.

Could you have tonsil stones?

pambeasly · 18/11/2022 21:58

Impacted wisdom teeth do cause halitosis due to pericoronitis.... However, that would only cause a temporary issue whilst there is active infection.

Based on your dental history and regular checks I suspect dehydration is your problem.

Drink lots of water throughout the day.

What's happening about the acid reflux? Are you medicated?

dragonfly16 · 18/11/2022 22:03

Have you been tested for the bacteria H.pylori which causes acid reflux?

Titsywoo · 18/11/2022 22:04

Acid reflux can give you very bad breath. My DD has it and we are struggling to deal with the smell.

low iton could be possible as I’m breastfeeding, not sure if it’s causing or contributing to the bad breath though.

I definitely don’t drink enough water so dehydration might be a contributing factor.

I try and avoid trigger foods to manage it and if it’s too bad I have gaviscon to help the symptoms.

Ask the dr for some omeprazole.

HairyKitty · 18/11/2022 22:54

Have you tried this? Was on offer in Boots

Add a water flosser like water pik and a oral rinse like ultredex to get rid of volatile sulphur compounds in the mouth. Do the gross sniff test : Floss your back teeth and see the floss smells. Eliminate garlic and onion from diet.

You can't necessarily see tonsil stones , they can be hiding in tonsil crypts. They stink.

How do you know you have them if you can’t see them.

I would just assume you have them then. Gargle every day, I just do it with tap water on the basis that ‘good is good, done is better’. I know lots of people use salt but I simply wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t really easy. So, tap water 🤷‍♀️.
Plus yes, dehydration.
