What odd/irrational fears do you have?

I saw an advert for a TV show recently where a woman comes home from work to find her house has been sold to another couple and all her possessions gone. I realised this taps into a (semi) irrational fear I have. Every time we’ve bought a new house I have this odd fear for the first year or so that whenever someone I don’t recognise comes to the door it might be the “actual” owner demanding to know why we are in their house.

I say semi irrational as there are odd cases of it happening (I think the series is based on a book inspired by a real life event). But still, it’s pretty silly. Anyone else have odd/irrational fears?

Being in a portaloo and it being tipped over with the door facing down.

@BamBamBilla 😳😳 well I didn’t until you said it… never going in a portaloo again now!

That's quite a specific fear, I must say.

I'm not suggesting it would be a pleasant experience, but it's not the first thing that springs to mind.

Cotton wool/ candy floss... the texture 🤢🤢

PuttingDownRoots · 18/11/2022 09:55

I have a phobia of fictional ghosts. (Comedy ones ok)

Not "real" ones. Tell me im in a haunted house... fine. Novels, films etc... I freak out. During GCSEs I couldn't cope when we studied The Signalman for example.

FormerCarer · 18/11/2022 09:58

That I'll find a body while walking my dogs and that the murderer(if there was one) might still be around.

FormerCarer · 18/11/2022 10:01

Also that I'll have to catch a baby, child or animal that's falling from a building.

Flapjackquack · 18/11/2022 10:01

@PuttingDownRoots - The Signalman will haunt me forever. I close my eyes going into tunnels when on the train just in case…

@FormerCarer - not that this will help you but this happened to my brother as a teen. The man had died of a heart attack (so no murderer) but still, not nice to come across.

Your poor Brother. That'd be traumatic even if they'd died by other means besides murder.

Unfortunately an Uncle of mine found the body of a woman who'd been murdered when he was a child. It's still distressing for him.

Burgerqueenbee · 18/11/2022 10:09

Rats coming up into a toilet bowl while I'm using it Blush I don't worry about it every time I go, but if I have seen a rat outdoors it takes ages to stop worrying about it happening!

LadybirdDaphne · 18/11/2022 10:11

Snails. Slimy bastards.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 18/11/2022 10:13

Loose buttons.

I can barely type it.

I am absolutely repulsed by them.

Leafsontheline · 18/11/2022 10:17

Freight trains. Find them spooky, especially when one passes a station I am on the platform at at night. The shadowy shape of the carriages..

Bornin70 · 18/11/2022 10:18

I can’t walk in front of a supermarket trolley as I’ve got this fear the person pushing it will bash it into me and send me flying.

He dealt with it remarkably well for a 13/14 yr old, I am pretty sure he had some counselling. Your poor uncle, that is horrific.

Another is that I can't relax at Train stations for fear that I'll witness someone jump in front of a train.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/11/2022 20:01

Moths. I am utterly terrified of moths. Butterflies are fine, but moths are screamingly awful. I completely appreciate that this fear is nonsensical, until the moment that one of the bastards comes into the house and then I'm locking myself in the bathroom until someoneelse deals with it.

Jennywren1975 · 18/11/2022 20:03

Driving over a level crossing. I'm always afraid the barrier is faulty and hasn't came down when a train is coming. It's always a relief when I make it safely across.

808Kate1 · 18/11/2022 20:05

Not sure if this is normal or odd, but any kind of massive structure - especially iron - that is partially submerged/sticking out of the sea - legs of a bridge or pier, oil rig. Even seeing them on the telly or going past on the train makes me feel sick.

3nough · 18/11/2022 20:05

Frogs, unpredictable jumpy bastards.
If I see one outside I become imprisoned in my home until DH can move it far far away. I can't even look at them 😭
