How do you eat your dinner? Anything you MUST have? A specific order..?

Strange title. Hear me out!
So I normally have a bit of everything on my fork (ie chicken, avocado and some rice) so I can experience the flavours together.
My friend eats her meat first, then will finish the rest slowly.
Another friend always has hot sauce. He takes it with him everywhere so no matter what he is eating he always has hot sauce.
My cousin doesn't like any wet food and eats everything separately (rice first, meat then the veg)

Do you have any specific eating ways?

I have a vague memory of a TV practical joke some years ago where the family of an inveterate bit-of-everything-on-the-forker made out like they were taking her to a normal restaurant for dinner, but were secretly taking her to the filmed venue set up for the joke, and the meal she was served had something like twenty different components. IIRC she valiantly attempted to press a bit of everything on there for each bite nevertheless. It was… an odd thing to make a TV bit from, TBH.

I like to keep the different components as separate as possible on the plate, unless they're meant to be combined (e.g. already together like shepherd's pie, or intended for combined consumption like dipping a chip in a fried egg), and I mostly try to only have one type of thing on the fork at a time, but there's no order overall — except that the last bite should be of my favourite part.

Isn't it a dangerous game saving the best til last? What if you get full??? And it goes cold?!

The best looking forkful first, generally a bit of everything all the way through but leave the worst bits til last for sure.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 17/11/2022 21:16

GreenTea those aren't the only dangers — I have a theory that those who grew up with older brothers rarely save their dumplings/Yorkshire puddings/meat/other best bits for last, lest they fall victim to the "Oh do you not want your dumplings then?" swipe.

(Still slightly smarting at the fact that when I was a kid my family used to say "Oh you know our Furry, her eyes are bigger than her tummy!" whenever I took a fairly large initial portion or couldn't finish what I'd taken — no, it's just that having a brother several years older meant that by the time I was ready to get seconds, he'd already raced through his dinner, polished off the rest with his second and third helpings, and was rummaging in the breadbin for something to mop up the gravy, so I had to take precautions. Bloody bottomless, teenage boys 🙄)

QuiteSomeTime · 17/11/2022 21:28

i eat things mostly separately, in order from least liked to most liked. if I like everything equally, I always eat the vegetables first for some reason

MummyInTheNecropolis · 17/11/2022 21:29

I don’t think I’ve ever been too full to finish a meal to be honest, so that’s never been an issue! 🤣

My DD carries a bottle of garlic Mayo in her handbag everywhere she goes - she rarely eats a meal without it!

mamaduckbone · 17/11/2022 21:48

A bit of everything, definitely.
I like my food 'wet' too, so will have loads of gravy/sauce.

My niece has salad cream with everything, which is a bit odd.

FreezyWater · 17/11/2022 21:59

I just dig in really, a mix of everything on my fork.

But I will always save a bit of my favourite thing til last mouthful.

I also cannot stand eating anything on its "own" so normally have some kind of dressing or sauce with it. Or gravy. Gravy is my fave!

Oblomov22 · 17/11/2022 22:01

All are normal. Between us as a family, we have most of the above.

EskSmith · 17/11/2022 22:18

Everything separately, I don't like it mixed and definitely not 'wet' (shudder) sauce on side for dipping into.
Even shepherd's pie I peel apart & eat potato & filling separately...

AdInfinitum12 · 17/11/2022 21:08

I'm a mixer. Everything gets chopped up and mixed together. I could eat all my dinners in a bowl haha.

And I have to have a drink. I can drink a pint of water with dinner quite happily. I can't understand people who don't need a drink while eating.

I'm a mixer too!
Last time I mentioned that on here I was told i was disgusting 🤣

Mixers unite!

peppaandherbloodymuddlepuddles · 17/11/2022 22:47

@mamaduckbone my son is a ketchup fiend. He wants it with everything, even chicken soup. Very weird lol

Er no, no set pattern but my grandad ate food in order, meat, veg, potatoes and hated gravy. Odd!

freezingmytoesoff · 17/11/2022 22:49

All of one thing and then move on to the next, no mixing and no food touching each other. I start with the veg, then the protein and finish with the carb.

Obviously if it's something like risotto then it's all at once, I don't sit picking each individual pea out...

chosenone · 17/11/2022 22:51

A bite of each and then rotate. Bit of meat, bite of cauli cheese, bite of potato, bite of peas and repeat. I like wet, gravy smothered food too and smaller pieces of everything 😅

VeganFromSveden · 18/11/2022 06:44

I have to eat the items on my plate in order of which cools off quickest.
I hate cooled off food.
in my opinion veg is the first to cool off, so cauliflower broccoli sprouts etc, to me are inedible unless they are steaming hot.
I have to eat Yorkshire puds quick too, else I shudder at the thought of them cooled off.
I like to have my food served on a pre heated plate.
better still, a heated deep dish so that food stays hot longer…. At home I’ve been known to eat from the pan on my lap… I know I sound completely deranged.
I realise it’s not right to want to almost burn my mouth rather than risk cooled off food.
I hate eating “out” just in case it’s less than bubbling when it arrives at the table.
it’s a terrible torment to me to witness waiting staff hovering around with my plate of food, chatting to a colleague about which table I’m at…
im also scared to accept a meal at a friends or relatives home, in case it’s not hot enough.
I then have to pretend not to feel well, and go hungry til I get home.
you can see why I love summer and the prospect of salads that are meant to be cold!

CarrieOnStop · 18/11/2022 06:48

People that have a sandwich and a packet of crisps and eat them at the same time are wrong.
I eat the sandwich and the crisps are not even opened till the sandwich is finished, then I eat the crisps.
I absolutely cannot eat them together!

Ifailed · 18/11/2022 07:01

I absolutely must have a drink with my dinner.

Interesting, I always used to wonder at the people who'd insist on having wine with a meal, but never actually drink any whilst eating.

Notsympatheticenough · 18/11/2022 07:08

BIL eats everything in order, veg, then meat…complicated order depending on relative value of the food in terms of what he likes. I’ve no idea how he eats the likes of pizza…

nephew can’t have food touching, he’s 40 with a v responsible job….but spends a lot of time explaining this in restaurants.

I like a bit of a mix on my fork, but will save a roastie and gravy for last.

SD1978 · 18/11/2022 07:20

The bits I'm not as interested in first, and 'save' the bit I'm looking forward to until last

mondaytosunday · 18/11/2022 08:41

Oh I have to have a bit of everything on my fork too! My annoying habit is I grew up in the US and I cut up all my food first then eat with the fork in my right hand. I don't do this when out or in company though.

Hoppinggreen · 18/11/2022 08:43

Things shouldn’t touch on the plate
Nothing too “wet”
Only one thing on the fork at a time

Hoppinggreen · 18/11/2022 08:44

Until I read this it never occurred to me that some people would even open their crisps until they finished their sandwich

peppaandherbloodymuddlepuddles · 18/11/2022 09:36

@CarrieOnStop you will hate me then. I absolutely love a smoked ham and cheese sandwich from Tesco with cheese and onion crisps inside the sandwich. Reminds me of school days 🤣🤣
