I am missing my World Cup mojo

Pebbles16 · 17/11/2022 18:59

I am a big football fan (thankless season ticket to a middling/low Premiership team), have loved the game for years. But...
I cannot get excited about this year's World Cup and I'm feeling quite sad about it.
I'm hoping that, once the matches begin, I will get more excited.
Anyone else feeling 'meh' about the whole thing (and feeling a little sorrowful)?

Me ! It just feels the wrong time of year for a World Cup and also doesn’t seem that long since the Euros due to Covid

LaurieFairyCake · 17/11/2022 19:03

No one should watch it

It's a horrific thing to happen

Very upset about it and won't watch one match. Even DH (season ticket holder) won't watch it.

It's soaked in blood. Those poor workers.

I am not a footie fan but agree that this WC is just not the same as usual and it's all on FIFA.

Agree. Morally I am not going to follow it and shall not be buying anything from supermarkets who are using the tournament to help their profits !

BringMeTea · 17/11/2022 19:10

Yup. Total meh. Weird.

NewspaperTaxis · 17/11/2022 19:14

It's got all the joy of tuning in to watch Matt Hancock on I'm a Celeb.

Usually the World Cup is in the summer when politics is either easing down or on holiday, right now there are other things to think about, it's not the silly season.

Almost a case of not wanting the team to do well because then you'll get reeled into watching something that stinks. Enjoying the Joe Lycett ultimatum, though.

CheeseIsMyPatronus · 17/11/2022 19:15

It's an abomination.

Pebbles16 · 17/11/2022 19:17

Hmmm, I agree. Maybe I just won't watch (DH will watch his team and shout loudly - they are not my team).
I want to support my team but I CANNOT support this World Cup

Agree OP. Time of year, Christmas, annoyed at the break in the league games, so yeah, no mojo.

And then add in the other stuff - and it's just all wrong.

SellFridges · 17/11/2022 19:20

I think the sports washing thing about Qatar is a bit misdirected to be honest. FIFA is an extraordinarily corrupt organisation, many participating countries have human rights issues, and this is certainly not the first World Cup held in a problematic location. It was in Russia four years ago. Russia.

I haven’t got the buzz yet, but I will I hope when it kicks off, the main problem with getting into it is it just feels odd having it at this time of year. Agree that it’s just not silly season.

NewspaperTaxis · 17/11/2022 19:28

Russia wasn't seen as the bogey man nation it now is a few years ago, it was borderline but many just felt, well, it's corrupt and in hoc to the billionaires but nice work if you can get it, certainly some Conservatives thought so. Not right, but it's that thing of turning a blind eye, sure - now it's bit us. What is interesting is that the UEFA thing is all about 'Hey, let's bring football to these dodgy nations as it will shed a light on them and bring democracy!' when of course coincidentally they also happen to be corrupt, so nice side-hustle if you can get it. No evidence of any reform, however.

Completely agree.

Exactly how I feel too, it's just all wrong from every angle.

balalake · 17/11/2022 19:46

@NewspaperTaxis Matt Hancock and his boss Boris Johnson have one thing in common with the Qataris, their neglect led to deaths.

Did you miss all of the controversies and boycotts over the Winter Olympics in Sochi? That was 2014!

Say a prayer to Saint Anthony, he's pretty good at finding this sort of thing.

(although he still hasn't come up Trump's with our spare house keys.)

Flapjackquack · 17/11/2022 20:20

I’m not a league football fan but love a good international competition and I am decidedly meh about it. I likely won’t watch it.

Yesterday I saw the video of the Danish news crew being forced off air for no reason by the Qatari security services. The whole thing is just disgusting. Hopefully this has done the complete opposite of what Qatar was hoping to achieve and they lose a ton of money from hosting it.

InFiveMins · 17/11/2022 21:32

We are boycotting it here. Shame as we love the World Cup.

the80sweregreat · 17/11/2022 21:33

It's just flat isn't it?

Nat6999 · 17/11/2022 21:36

Definitely not feeling it, it is usually in summer when you can drink & watch outside packed pubs.

the80sweregreat · 17/11/2022 21:37

It doesn't feel as if it's actually going to be any good : it's November! It's not the right time of the year for starters ! ( I know nothing about football )

frozendaisy · 17/11/2022 22:04

It's an unnatural break in football season.

You have domestic leagues. They finish every two years there is regather for an international competition. That is natural.

This is rubbish. Rivals in leagues, group for nationals, back to day job mid-dec.

We all know football is corrupt. But so blatant is a step to far.

Plus too much else going on. Christmas prep, exams, children in need. Football is, clearly, not as important as it thinks it is.
