Scars - is there any way of getting rid?

My son who has special needs scratched my forearm quite badly during meltdown a few weeks ago and it has now left a pitted scar. I'm very conscious of it and concerned that people who don't know me well (customers at work etc) might assume it's from self harm given the area its in.

Is there anything that will help reduce the appearance? I don't want that there forever, I'm very pale so it's really obvious.

Try massaging with vitamin E oil each day.

Sunnysal · 17/11/2022 21:26

Bio oil helps.

QuiteSomeTime · 17/11/2022 21:26

The redness will fade (vitamin e helps apparently) but the scar will always be there, just white

Silicone plasters. Takes a long time but worth it.

tickticksnooze · 17/11/2022 21:29

There is no evidence that bio oil does anything for scars.

Silicone gel however can help but usually only within the first 3 years after the injury.

NHS website says the same on scars.

Silicone scar reduction sheets work great & are reusable. Recommended to me by my surgeon after facial surgery and scar barely visible now.

Suncream on it every day will reduce the appearance. Or keep it covered. It will fade with time but you can't get rid of it, don't waste money on lotions and potions.

In the mean time, blame the cat!

Girlattheback · 17/11/2022 21:30

Silicone scar gel works really well.

Thanks for the replies and helpful suggestions.

I'll get some vitamin E oil tomorrow.

I have sudocrem already so will slap some of that on now.

With regards to the silicone gel, would any suffice or is it a case of the more expensive = more effective? I can see superdrug do one for £10ish.

This is good, I used it when I had two moles taken off my face and the scars are only visible if you really look for them now.

This. They don't work quickly, as others have said, but my surgeon also recommended then and there is barely any visible sign of a hip and ankle replacement. As far as bio oil is concerned it has no impact at all - it is the regular massage that helps, so basically any oil will do - I wouldn't recommend it as it's messy, but cooking oil is just as effective! Silicone scar sheets, plus regular massage with a good quality oil.

You can get excellent quality silicon sheets from ebay / China. Most of them are produced there or India anyway!

Oblomov22 · 17/11/2022 22:03

I have no idea, but I rubbed bio oil for all my stomach and c section scars.

SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 17/11/2022 22:03

Scar sheets I bought were from Amazon - £7.97! You can just rinse in water & reuse so really cheap.

YU8 · 17/11/2022 22:03

I'm fascinated by these silicone sheets / gel.

How exactly do they work?

OP posts:
SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 17/11/2022 22:33

I was told they keep the scar soft which helps healing / redness. Surgeon told me just to put one on overnight for 3 months. Only bought one pack and still have some leftover!

Mossstitch · 17/11/2022 22:37

Silicon scar sheets definitely work, I had a raised scar from minor op, was like a piece of string on top of skin, 24 hrs after using the silicone sheet it was flat and now can barely see it.

Oinkypig · 17/11/2022 22:44

As someone who does have a lot of self harm scars my experience is keeping it moisturised with anything will help. They will fade loads anyway, they are still at such an early stage of healing still so please try not to worry they’ll look like that forever.

Also most people are oblivious as well so don’t worry from that point of view either!

You’ve enough to be thinking about with your son and caring for him x
