Is there such a thing as a raincoat…

…which doesn’t rustle?!

I work outdoors and absolutely hate the rustly feeling of wearing a coat, the noise it makes whenever I move etc. Don’t mind it so much for a thorough downpour, but days like today with intermittent drizzle there must be something less irritating I can wear?!

I have a Mackintosh - from Mackintosh. No rustle!

Paramo coats, not particularly stylish and you must follow the washing instructions but incredibly waterproof and long lasting.

Mountain rescue wear them. I have had one for 11 years, I wear it for horse duties in all but boiling hot weather and it is still going strong.

They are made by the company who make Nikwax and are an ethical brand too. You can get recycled or reconditioned ones, they have a lifetime guarantee and a trade in programme.

They are soft and don't feel waterproof too

Paramo coats I got excited about this and then looked and all the women's ones I could see are in vomity 'women's' colours - why do they do this!? The men's ones are khaki, blue, grey and the women's are bloody pink and turquoise. This is my biggest clothing irritation.

I find that old style gortex jacket (over 10 years old) doesn't rustle as much as the new extremely light weight ones, which seem really crinkly and noisy to me!

Do you just want the jacket to be waterproof or does it have to be warm as well?
I live in N Yorkshire and got fed up of being constantly cold and rained on and invested in a Mountain Equipment waterproof down jacket (Triton). It's quite quiet (but not silent!). Wouldn't normally spend this much on a coat but I live in it Nov-April and don't have to worry about layering up or carrying separate waterproof in case of rain. I would talk to a reputable outdoor shop and ask their advice. They are often very knowledgeable about fabrics and the technical side.

I second Paramo, have used them for years. As well as being non-crunchy they are really breathable so you don’t get sweaty. I’ve had a navy one, a grey one and a greyish green one in the past, I do hope they haven’t abandoned those in womens’ sizes permanently in favour of garish colours.

I agree - I hate the rustle! When I have the hood up I call it "cagoule head" because all you can hear is swish, swish, swish. Loathe the fabric and feel of waterproofs but as a fell runner sadly needs must. I have never found a waterproof jacket I actually like.

Thanks all, I’ll look them all up - given me extra Christmas present ideas which is handy!

Just looking for waterproof which I can add to other layers, I’m permanently too hot nowadays so definitely nothing thick

Do give them feedback on this. They have got better with the colours but I do agree.

If you like khaki try the range aimed at wildlife photographers. You could look at the Men's ones too depending upon your shape. I have had things from the men's range.

Actually having checked their own website the "women's colours" are very much a minority with plenty of navy/grey/red/khaki/black and only a few purple/pink options.

I agree, I actually think they have a very good range of colours for women.
