£10 a day on electricity

That's what I'm hitting now. On a smart meter and they won't let me change.

Large family, but small terraced house.
It's so stressful.

how would changing your meter help? It wouldn’t. Are you using electricity for heating? Things like heaters, tumble dryers, dishwashers, ovens etc use a lot of electricity - basically anything that generates heat. Lights etc not much.

IntrovertedPenguin · 17/11/2022 08:24

Changing your meter won't help. Are you fixed or variable?

What are you using for it to be £10? Oven? Tumble dryer? Etc?

NoSquirrels · 17/11/2022 08:26

Do you mean smart meter or prepayment meter?

A smart meter just tracks your usage, same as a ‘non-smart’ meter.

A prepayment meter has higher rates, so that would be worth fighting to get changed if you can.

Electricity is really expensive. Unfortunately the only thing is to try to reduce your usage.

I am presuming you are on a prepayment, as you have said they won't let you change. Have they given a reason for not allowing you to change?

Have you spoken to other suppliers to see if they will allow you to move to direct debit billing?

If changing cannot be done, the only way to reduce the cost will be to reduce usage. You will need to be ruthless in working out what you can reduce energy usage on. Perhaps less oven based meals, less reliance on electronic entertainment etc.

Spoodee · 17/11/2022 08:44

Yes prepayment with a standing charge daily.

I've air fryers so don't use my oven and that's gas anyways.

Haven't put my heating on yet.

I'm constantly turning lights off.

I use tumble dryer yes, I've kids though. I can't not. And I don't put the heating on so can't dry stuff on radiators.

Not having a prepayment meter wound save you a bit but not a huge amount so either way you need to try to reduce your usage as £10 per day is very high if that does not include heating.

if washing is the main issue, make sure you wash on a cold cycle and try to reduce your volume of washing - e.g. things like trousers and jumpers don’t need to be washed after every wear.

Bostock82 · 17/11/2022 19:27

im on prepayment and average £3.50-£4 per day.

4 bed detached home.

How much is your standing charge? Im 52.5p per day

Frazzled2207 · 17/11/2022 19:31

Seems very high
wr have moved to a cheaper overnight tariff so washing machine and dishwasher are on overnight and much cheaper
we do have a drier but don’t use it very much- either put the washing out or in airer as and put them in the machine to finish off

we find the oven is the single biggest drain of electricity- are you really not using it at all?

if you haven’t already, replace all your lightbulbs with energy saving ones

SpringIntoChaos · 17/11/2022 20:18

@Frazzled2207 I haven't used my oven since August...which is when I bought my air fryer. Literally never had to 🤷‍♀️ I use the microwave, air fryer, and occasionally the slow cooker. I only use the hob if I'm boiling or poaching eggs, which is rarely. I'm astonished at the difference it has made to my electricity consumption 😱

Spoodee · 20/11/2022 09:31

Im in a 3bed mid terrace with 4 kids.

I have a heat mat running 24/ for my animals and I also have 4 CCTV cameras cause I live in a shitty area.

Ds1 has a PlayStation he spends his time on and DS2 runs a PC.

Normal things like phones running.

Nothing excessive

I'm definitely using £10 a day.

Topped up £20 on 18th and am now on £1 again.

Already can't afford to go out and do stuff and now I have to tell the kids they can't play on their consoles either?!

Well your usage is excessive unfortunately. Did you qualify for any of the governements support packages?

TimeForMeToF1y · 20/11/2022 09:47

I'm guessing that a heat pad is the most expensive thing to run, things like CCTV and charging phones is next to nothing

actualnamechange · 20/11/2022 09:47

I don't even hit £10 a day and I am quite high usage. All the usually PC/TV/console things going on (3 bed semi, 5 people) and I use my dryer all the time. Sometimes I don't touch it for a couple of days then I could be using it for a whole afternoon to catch up. I am pay as you go with a smart meter.

ummmwtaf · 20/11/2022 09:50

Up to £13 a day here. WFH and tumble dryer running daily. But seeing the bigger picture it's not so bad as drying washing on the line and boiler turned off from early April means the yearly average is significantly less than the winter months.

Afterfire · 20/11/2022 09:52

It would be cheaper to put your heating on and dry clothes on radiators rather than use the tumble dryer - gas is cheaper than electric.

BigScreen · 20/11/2022 09:52

Mines £10 a week so yours seems very high !!

4kinell · 20/11/2022 09:55

Don't have any advice sorry but I'm in a similar situation . 3 bed semi , have cut all usage down to bare minimum . Haven't used the oven in months , just occasionally the air fryer . Don't use the dryer , washing machine only on a cold wash , barely even watch telly haven't put central heating on yet and mine is still using £9 a day . It's horrendous .

11p over 24 hours

Less than £3 a day ( including standing charge and vat)
2 of us. Total gas and electricity bill was £162 this month. Heating on about 10 hours in total over the month.

megletthesecond · 20/11/2022 10:07

Immersion heater?
Electric shower?
Fridge or freezer with faulty seal leaking cold air?

nancydroo · 20/11/2022 10:08

Ours is £9.50 a day for has and electric. Don't use much has. Family if 4. 30% of our electricity is home entertainment so you could save a lot turning the PlayStation off and just maybe all watch one tv at the same time

Violashift · 20/11/2022 10:11

We hit £10 a day but have the heating on. That's the gas.
No heating it's about £4. 3 bed semi

Hellocatshome · 20/11/2022 10:17

On a weekend we are hitting £10 gas and elec combined a day and thats not prepayment so slightly cheaper rates.
But at weekends we use the washing machine and tumble dryer maybe twice a day, there is normally at least 1 TV and 1 games console on pretty much all day.

Christmaslover2022 · 20/11/2022 10:20

I think this us the situation for alot. We average £8 a day atm and our heating is set to 17. It's cold. Minimising everything we can, even the daily showers now are hurry up, the metre is running, not a joy. It's crap

PottyDottyDotPot · 20/11/2022 10:28

I feel for you OP, we use £10 per day but have loads of gadgets, heating on, charge an electric car, have a large 4 bedroom house and 2 WFH adults and 2 retired adults at home.
I don’t use a tumble dryer and have heating between 17 and 19 depending on time of day. That’s a preference decision not a cost one.
