Please help me negotiate my salary up tomorrow

Been offered a job today. It's at my employers main competitor, similar work to what I currently do but more responsibility and a bit higher level but not loads. Kind of half a promotion.

I currently earn £46k. The job at the competitor was advertised as "From £45k". Salary bands are usually about 10k wide in my industry. So I expected to be offered mid- band to reflect experience and make it a raise and worthwhile moving employers. I would have been very happy with £50k.

However when I raised the topic of salary when offered the job, the boss said the salary was £45 but when away and came back and offered £47k.

I will kick myself for not negotiating here and trying again for closer to £50k.

Any advice very appreciated! I'll be emailing them back tomorrow.

Hello! You’ve probably already emailed back but as you have a current secure role I would just tell them that £50k is the minimum you would consider to make the move. Play hard ball.

I hope you managed to negotiate up @LucySno ? When I started my current job years ago I didn't negotiate and was furious with myself for years for not as colleagues doing exactly the same job were earning more as they negotiated. So good on you for trying at least and just hope you got it :)

Nah - £1k gross a year isn't worth the hassle of moving jobs.

Assuming you're not desperate to leave, tell them £50k is the minimum you'd be prepared to move for and leave it with them.

Hi! Thanks for the replies! I'll tell you what happened, because personally I love a thread that has a conclusion!

I wrote an email back that was worded well about my extensive experience and track record of impact and asked for £50k. I also asked for my flexible working request that they had agreed in theory for 3 months after I start to start immediately.

The director who is absolutely lovely asked to just phone me, and we talked on the phone. She said £47 is what to top performers in the team are on and she can't go higher. She agreed to the flex working from day 1 though. She also pointed out it's 11% employer pension contribution, my current place only contributes 6%.

Also though... the day before, my current employer announced an absolutely stupid restructure that's such a bad idea and would involve my current job changing or me having to apply for a sideways move to a less annoying role on the same money.

So, I've taken the new job

Sounds positive!

Searching for advice and found this thread.. Can anyone advise me on a similar situation?

I have accepted a job that pays £50k. I tried to haggle it up more as that's on the low side for my line of work and that level of role. They wouldn't budge much and said that's what the highest paid person in the role is on and they couldn't go higher. For various reasons I decided to accept.

Now I've spotted a job ad for the same organisation, same level, for £60k in a different department. Like this-

My new job- Deputy Head of X, £50k
The other job at same company- Deputy Head of Y, £60k

Should I take this up with them or is this normal/ acceptable?

Bumblefeet · 26/01/2023 08:58

As a first, I'd be asking them to explain the difference.

Elsanore · 26/01/2023 11:56

Do you think I ask my line manager, or HR?

Not started the new role yet. In email contact with each of them separately.
