Change of role at work

Looking for some advice/perspective please.

Restructure happening at work, happens every couple of years. My role has changed so I keep what I am doing but have additional responsibilities.

My problem is the new responsibilities include a significant amount of travel around the UK. I would never have applied for such a role as it doesn't suit my domestic life, I am completely on my own with a 12 year old (her Father lives abroad, no contact), we have a dog and cats, I hate driving and staying away from home.

Can my company do this to me? Do I have any options other than finding a new job?!

The restructure, is this under a redundancy?

What does your contract say about travelling?

Thanks for responding! No redundancy proposed, no loss of FTEs just a restructure.

Don't think I've had a new contract since I joined a couple of decades ago, not sure where I'd even find it TBH.

They need to consult with you about changes, particularly where it is a material change and as such becomes significant, can be argued that it is not reasonable.

have they spoken about how they can adjust to support you?

do you have a union you can speak with for advice?

Also, would this include, for instance a car or car allowance, if you didn’t have one previously?

A car should be provided if there is now “business need”.

this is all quite separate to the impact on your home life and childcare.

Thank you @Motherofalegend, appreciate the advice. They couldn't give a stuff about my concerns sadly. I'm not sure what they'll do if I just don't do it?!

Already get a car allowance as part of my package for my grade rather than because it's a requirement.

I’d contact acas or your trade union rep if you have one /
also keep everything and get it in writing.
