Those with a low glasses prescription

It is really worth it. Had eye test as spend long shifts looking at lots of screen with little chance for eye breaks! Had few headaches so got an eye test and have a very small prescription, optician said personal choice on whether I wanted to try glasses. Do those with a low prescription both and find it helps?

Thanks

Mine is only +0.25 but it takes the strain off my eyes. My optician said it was like walking down the road with bare feet or trainers on. I only need them for the screen but I definitely see a benefit

Topseyt123 · 16/11/2022 12:29

You could possibly buy a pair of the cheap reading glasses in the supermarket or pharmacy. That way you could try it out and have lost hardly anything if it doesn't make any difference.

You never know, it may help.

I don't have a low prescription, I have a fairly complex one. If I did though then that would be what I would try.

I have a low prescription and I wear glasses at work. I find the anti glare coating helps when looking at a screen for long periods.

I have a very low prescription but it really does help with eye strain and I have less headaches now that I wear glasses.

Zarzuela · 16/11/2022 12:37

Optician told me to use the ready readers for now until need a higher prescription.

skgnome · 16/11/2022 12:39

I have a low prescription
the optician also said it was up to me and that he didn’t thought I “needed them”
after half a year I got them
i have weeks where I do not use than at all… have weeks where I cannot read anything without them… I can, but it strains my eyes and end up with a headache
somedays they are indispensable, somedays I don’t need them at all

RowanAspenOak · 16/11/2022 12:41

I wear a +1 for reading. I don’t need them all the time but I have anti glare on them and a blue light filter, as I find they help with screens. For books in decent light I don’t need anything, but in lower light they help.
I just buy them off the shelf. Do you need a more complex lens though ?

KitchenSupper · 16/11/2022 12:42

I had lasik many years ago and only now have sharted to have a tiny amount of short sight. I had -7 before the lasik so almost didn’t bother getting the glasses but in fact I am loads more comfortable working on the computer and see better even when not wearing the glasses because my eyes are less tired.

SirenSays · 16/11/2022 12:44

I asked my optician and she said not really but you can get wrinkles from squinting 😅

Annon12345 · 16/11/2022 12:50

Fabulous thank you! The strength is different for each eye. I've found some for £20 with lenses from an online company so I'll give them a try. I do spent lots of time staring at a screen with headaches so definitely worth a try I think
Thank you

Largely due to Covid, I waited a year between being told I could do with getting glasses and actually getting them. I've now had them for 1.5yrs and find that I really notice if I don't wear them when I'm working at the computer or reading a book for a chunk of time. I don't usually wear them when on my phone or Kindle as I've increased the font size

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/11/2022 13:00

I had the same conversation with my optometrist re: personal choice, not strictly necessary but might be a good idea to "take the strain off" if I "have a lot of time at the computer"

Ultimately I don't bother to wear them and it was a waste of money really. I went back twice to check the prescription was correct and that they fit properly but just found they were making me feel a bit dizzy when I then took them off again, and then took a while to adjust to putting them on despite the fact that yes, text on the screen was marginally crisper so there was potentially some benefit there but I just didn't enjoy wearing them at all. I think it's me rather than the glasses (or optician) to clarify, but nonetheless they weren't cheap and they just sit in the drawer as I don't technically need them there's no motivation to go and get them.

I've since tried again with a different optician who suggested the exact same so I've not bothered this time and would rather go without as I just couldn't adjust to them.

GetOffTheRoof · 16/11/2022 13:07

What is the prescription you need?

If you're having headaches, it must be noticeable for you in some way as it's having effects.

etulosba · 16/11/2022 13:12

I have a low prescription, but I still can’t easily read a car number plate at the required distance. So, specs it is for me.

xogossipgirlxo · 16/11/2022 13:17

If you have headaches, yes. My husband felt massive difference with his low prescription glasses.

Btw. when I had my contact lenses trial at Boots, they suggested I should have my contacts power less by 0.25 than my glasses, because you put it right to your eye, and there's distance between your eyes and glass lens. I couldn't see road signs properly, so it really does make a difference.

JimmyKrankie · 16/11/2022 13:55

Since I started wearing glasses - low prescription- my eyes have got way worse. I guess it makes your eyes lazy. If you can manage ok without, personally I would for as long as possible.

TwinklingStarlight · 16/11/2022 14:01

If you're getting headaches, that's your answer, even if you do end up needing them more. You don't have to wear them all the time. I have astigmatism and for years I used to use my glasses for study but not for leisure reading.

bigbluebus · 16/11/2022 14:03

For reading/close work I buy cheap reading glasses from Home Bargain. For driving I paid for prescription glasses even though I was borderline.

VenusClapTrap · 16/11/2022 14:17

I need mine for driving now that signs and number plates are getting fuzzy for me, but I generally don’t bother the rest of the time. Whenever I do put them on though, it’s always a bit “Oh! Look at that! I can see!” Because I think I tend to forget how my eyes have deteriorated over the last couple of years. I should wear them more often.

arapunzel · 16/11/2022 14:54

If your on the screen a lot then you really do need to be having breaks - general rule is 20/20/20, every 20 minutes look away from the screen to a distance of 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and keep blinking. When your on the screen your eyes blink less and this can lead to dry/sore/tired eyes.
If your a minus prescription then off the shelf reading glasses will not help as they are only sold in plus powers

underneaththeash · 16/11/2022 15:42

What’s your prescription OP and how old are you?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/11/2022 17:12

I have a low prescription. It was a bit higher but has improved. I still need them for driving and watching gigs and things.
