What will I forget - temporary kitchen when the proper one is ripped out?

Kitchen is shortly to be ripped out. While we are waiting for the new one to be installed we will set up a temporary kitchen camp in another room.

Speaking from experience, what am I likely to forget that we will need in our camp kitchen?

A tin opener and a corkscrew!

ShinyPikachu · 16/11/2022 11:43

Chopping boards/bread board.

2 plastic washing up bowls to wash up in. Use one to transport dirty dishes, put the clean on into the bath and fill it with water in the bath. When the dirty one is emptied, clean that and use it to transport the clean and dry crockery back to the kitchen.

Maybe some disposable plates/bowls for days when it is all a bit too much. Re corkscrew etc, we just lifted out the cutlery tray and utensils tray so we had everything. We bunked the two children in together and used the other child's bedroom for everything kitchen meaning nothing was too far away should we need it.

Storage - even if you're not in it for long, where you will store your crockery etc

We bought this from ikea was a saviour! www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/tillreda-portable-induction-hob-1-zone-white-70493503/

Ah my sympathies to you - we're in exactly the same situation right now! We're extending, so no chance of a fully functional kitchen again until after Christmas!

We're mostly using the air fryer and the microwave to cook, plus going out to eat sporadically for a break. We deliberately packed away almost all the crockery and cutlery to force the teenagers to rinse and reuse glasses/cups etc, and this seems to be working. Before, with the dishwasher every single cup and glass in the house would get used!

We're muddling along by OK. Thinking a bit harder about what we buy and cook to try to ensure less clear up. We also cooked and froze lots of meals so we can have home made microwave meals, which are a nice break. Our dining room has been repurposed as our temporary kitchen, the most useful thing has been the water dispenser in the fridge, which we fill up every day, so we don't need to traipse upstairs for water all the time!

It'll be worth it in the end when we have our lovely new bigger kitchen!

Thanks everyone, some great ideas which I hadn’t thought of yet! We will still have the sink in the utility for washing up thankfully, and I’ve bought an air fryer to go along with the microwave and a couple of standalone hobs which we have borrowed. Going to get some plastic shelving and storage boxes for things.

I saw a woman on tiktok wash her dishes in the bath in this situation, and now has a severely scratched brand new bath. Make sure you use a washing up bowl!

HappyHamsters · 16/11/2022 13:34

Table top fridge if you are waiting for a new one

MrSlant · 16/11/2022 13:47

We coped very well last year with microwave/toaster and slow cooker (the last was the best bit). Bit of planning and it was fine. Builders let me keep the fridge on in the middle of the kitchen which helped. I normally hate microwave rice but found it was most agreeable with a slow cooked curry when it saved on washing up!

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 16/11/2022 15:10

We have a freestanding fridge/freezer at the moment so that will be moved into the temporary kitchen room which is great because it will mean we keep all that storage.

I’m not organised enough for a slow cooker! I only tend to think about what we are going to eat as I walk into the kitchen to make tea. We do have one though (mum’s old one, never used it!) so I’ll think about whether to pack that away or not when emptying the kitchen.
