How does Nest work?! I can’t schedule it?

Driving me mad. Just want it on an hour midnight to 1, then an hour 3-4 and an hour 6-7. In the day I switch it on as and when.

the timer thing seems to let you set for say, midnight, but not for a specified length of time?

Which Nest version do you have?

Rainallnight · 15/11/2022 22:52

I can’t work out my Nest at all. Watching with interest.

Uoedklo · 15/11/2022 22:55

@CookieDoughKid i think the basic one? It was newly installed when we moved in.

@Rainallnight honestly I bloody hate it! Far too technical for me

If it's like ours it's thermostat so you could set the temperature to go off (eg. Set it to 0° so it won't click on unless it reaches 0) for the times you don't want it on? Ours is set to 9° most of the day and then to 19 when we want it on x

Uoedklo · 15/11/2022 23:00

@CSR721 thanks but how do you set it!? The calendar symbol doesn’t let me set it for a duration I don’t think. Which I don’t understand

Go to the app, under the schedule tab, then select your temperature and timings. This is what mine looks like

CSR721 · 15/11/2022 23:02

Yes as @porkandbeans says you set the temperature at the time you want it. So if you set it 19 at 3, and then 9 (or 0) at 4 then it will click off at 4 because its above threshold x

Cynderella · 15/11/2022 23:02

Yes, definitely get the app and schedule on your phone - I'm not impressed with its ability to 'learn'.

Uoedklo · 15/11/2022 23:02

@porkandbeans thsnk you… those orange dots though… how long will it stay at 19?

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2022 23:02

Isn’t the idea that it comes on when it’s below the temperature you want? So that’s different to having your heating on a timer at set times, when it doesn’t matter what the temperature of your house is. I think you’re trying to make it do something that’s opposite to its design purpose.

balzamico · 15/11/2022 23:02

I have the same gripe about it. My old wall mounted timer also had a button that you could flick the heating on for an hour - I actually think I'm less fuel efficient using the Nest as I have it set for 19 but it can take two hours to heat up to that

PriamFarrl · 15/11/2022 23:03

Here is mine if that helps.

You can say when you want it to come on, but not when you want it to go off.

@CSR721 do you literally have to set every hour then? So if I want it off for an hour in between I have to set zero?

It will stay at 19 until it gets to the time ox the next orange dot x

@PriamFarrl but then it would be on all the time? I’m so confused and so rubbish with technology!

No. It turns off with it knows you’ve gone out. So for us on a weekday it turns off after 8 or so.

@NoSquirrels i just want it on when I want it on… obviously in the day that’s easy but not at night

This is mine (husband set it don't ask 😂😂) so at 6 it will click on if the house is under 18. The at 7.45 it will click off because its warmer than 9. Then it'll click back on at 12 if the house is under 16, then at 1 it will click back off unless itscoldse than 9. Does that make sense?

PriamFarrl · 15/11/2022 23:07

It has two states, home and away. It learns when you are likely to come home, if that isn’t scheduled in, and puts the heating on in advance.

CSR721 · 15/11/2022 23:08

If you want it off, just set it to a temperature that the house won't drop below like 0. You can also turn it off on the app by setting it to away. But @NoSquirrels is right it's designed to work as a thermostat.

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2022 23:08

Yes, but the point is it only comes ‘on’ actively if your house needs warming up to the temperature you’ve set. If it doesn’t need to be on 2-3, because your house has stayed at 19 degrees, then it won’t come on.

Why do you want it ‘on when you want it on’ rather than ‘I want my house to be warm between x hours and y hours’?

CookieDoughKid · 15/11/2022 23:12

Have you tried installing the Nest app on your phone? It's much easier for scheduling. You can have it come on and off at specific times of the day and several times a day.

porkandbeans · 15/11/2022 23:15

Like others have said it only comes on if it goes under the temperature set. It looks like mine is on all day but hasn't actually been on as the temperature hasn't gone below 19 degrees.
Plus is goes down when we are out. That doesn't really happen that often as both of us WFH a lot

RustySprings · 18/11/2022 23:00

Watching with interest too - and sympathy! Got my new boiler and Nest installed a couple of days ago. Thought it would be simple! Getting boggled eyed watching youtube vids and reading up. I am used to an old boiler with a clock dial and tabs to set times on and times off and a temperature setting. Very old school I know, but it worked for me! Nest is doing my head in !!!

CookieDoughKid · 19/11/2022 08:43

tip. Make sure you do not have phone location tracking enabled on nest otherwise it will think you are not at home and it won’t turn on your boiler.
