Why would you choose to bottle feed?

I don’t mean to offend, I’m genuinely curious. I’ve recently had a baby and really tried hard to breastfeed but it just didn’t work for us (latch and supply issues, very unsettled baby, subsequent medication etc)

I really wish breastfeeding was successful for us, not only because it’s nutritionally superior for the baby, but there are also health benefits for the mum, and l if successful at breastfeeding it’s so much easier to latch baby on than to faff with making up formula and sterilising bottles etc.

So this isn’t directed at mums who tried to breastfeed and it didn’t work out so moved to formula, or mums who chose to combi feed because I understand the benefits of that. But for mums / parents who chose to bottle feed before even attempting to breastfeed - why?

Absolutely no judgment here - just curious.

I've done a mix of both and it's not amazing and beautiful, as claimed by a pp. At least not for everyone! it's sore and uncomfortable and makes me feel queasy. My boobs never stopped leaking and were enormous, I was knackered, couldn't go anywhere or do anything without the baby. I got mastitis. Bf might be natural but's definitely not always easy!
Bottles are lovely - you can get a nights sleep, monitor how much your child is feeding, share feeding with baby's dad, not have to find somewhere private and nice to feed while out, not have leaky boobs.

Contrary to statements made by pp, the bond isn't greater or less according to how you feed a baby.

I don't buy for a minute that there's no judgement here!

@Emmamoo89 genuine question, do you think expressing those views to friends and colleagues (if you do) could be quite upsetting or offensive? Just thinking for many they want to and can’t - it’s lovely you’re able to and enjoy it but surely you can see it’s not for everyone and with good reason?

Blocked · 15/11/2022 23:18

Nope Smile you take them apart and wash them as usual then put a bit of water in the bottom, pop in the teat and the ring and the lid goes on top. You can do 4 at a time in the microwave and they stay sterile for I think it's 48 hours. Better than a steriliser actually because once you've opened the steriliser and assembled the bottles they're not sterile anymore.

@Blocked thank you!! So any MAM bottles basically?

I'm sorry but saying disgusted is going too far. Its not at all. Its the most natural thing in the world. Its beautiful

No it isn't. There are hundreds of equally natural things in the world. Breastfeeding isn't special.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 23:22

It was 20+ years ago now but it was as far from amazing and beautiful as you could possibly get in my experience.

I've never once said I'm not against people who don't or can't. Just giving my opinion on it ☺️ I get no hate for it. My friends and Co workers are happy for me and say we'll done for going this far cause it ain't easy

@Emmamoo89 fair enough! Just not sure its something I would express so keenly for or against. But as I say it’s lovely you’ve enjoyed it

Yes it is going too far. I think its special. The bond I have with my son is amazing. Its not just about feeding. So many other things come in to it

Blocked · 15/11/2022 23:28

@Uoedklo not the glass ones but I think all the rest are self sterilising. It'll say self sterilising on the box/website so just make sure before you buy.

It's not special. It's a bodily function. It's not more or less natural than any other bodily function. If you want to do it then fill your boots but it's not remarkable.

How can it be going too far when it genuinely does disgust me? I cannot help how I feel about it. It used to set me on edge, I have a great bond with both my kids, you don't need to breastfeed.
Stop being thinly veiled in your self righteousness and own it

@Emmamoo89 ive a friend who is still doing it and their dc is 3.5!! I find it very uncomfortable but obviously haven’t said! My sisters all did it to 2, but that would absolutely be my cut off

People don't realise how hard and tiring it is. The fact I've got to 8 months is amazing tbf

@Sheepl i think @Emmamoo89 may be intending to be inflammatory. Breast feeding is not what creates a bond, it may contribute to a bond but there’s many many things that do that!

@Emmamoo89 you’re literally the only person who cares about that though? Sure, congratulate yourself if that’s your key achievement in life but honestly, if it’s so tiring and hard move on… it’s only yourself you’re putting through it! Xx

Of course they do. Confused

Wow some of the posters on here 🙈 so aggressive!!

Thank you to the posters who answered my question. I hadn’t considered sensory issues but that totally makes sense! Also knowing how much your baby is getting is also a massive plus.

Is it true that bottle fed babies sleep better than breastfed? I read conflicting information everywhere!

Think this boober has gone a bit far. You played it well though with a few smug face emojis and rather “dim” vibe.

Nope. Its not how they eat. My son has slept through the night since 10/11 weeks. Breastfed. It's down to the baby how well they sleep. Some love it some don't.
