Where to move in northern England?

Hi guys, I hope you are well. I really need some advice so I have turned to my trusted mums netters for some ☺️.

We want to relocate to the north of England. My husband has a job in Lancaster but works remotely so we have flexibility in terms of moving anywhere really but would prefer the north. He goes to Lancaster three times a year so can catch a train from anywhere.

We live in a “sought after” area at the moment so would want something similar in terms of well looked after area, low crime rate, good/excellent schools, good amenities, professionals/families etc.

We would like to move somewhere not to far from the coast (10 miles or so) and also somewhere that has lots of green space/semi rural.

We have a budget on 250-260. So a semi-detached would be great.

We would also need to move somewhere that has some diversity due to our ethnicity and not wanting to feel a little isolated/or that we stand out etc.

Any ideas?

thank you in advance x

@Milkand2sugarsplease all are expensive tbh. We were looking at nearby Wheelton which is indeed lovely but nothing in that budget sadly. Horwich/Anderton could have something in that range but even up here sought after areas are in demand and prices well above the average.

Another vote for Poulton or Thornton Cleveleys.

What about Penrith. Its just up the main line or motorway from Lancaster as well as direct access to bigger locations, has the usual range of shops, good schools and is on the edge of the Lake district and Pennines. It's not near the coast though ( about an hour away) so it depends how essential that is if you have lakes instead.
Other than that what about Cockermouth. Smaller but a lovely market town, full of professionals, less than 10 miles to the coast but still near the lakes. It doesn't have train access but its an easy and nice drive to Lancaster and less than an hour to Carlisle for a bigger city. Doesn't have loads of diversity but I've taught their and never experienced any racism.

Lake District!

Have you considered Chester, beautiful area of the north and around the corner from north wales coast line

Also Garstang. Just south of Lancaster, nice market town. Not loads of shops but easy bus route into Lancaster or Preston and lots of greenery on your doorstep with the coast down the road.

South Ribble - Penwortham, Hutton, Longton, New Longton.
All very green. Great schools and communities.
Twenty minutes into the city, half an hour from the coast. An hour to Manchester, Liverpool.
Love it here.

Whalley is a lovely little town with a few nice restaurants etc and easy drive to Lancaster and the coast. There's three bed new builds up in great Harwood a couple of miles away in budget.

The area around Blackpool is stunning and not at all Blackpooly, except Fleetwood. I live in a village Over Wyre, near the sea but very rurally so it might not appeal to you.

Garstang is a lovely market town, Poulton is really nice and good for restaurants and a (not too crazy) night out. Halton, Hest Bank or Bolton-Le-Sands are all lovely villages and parts of Heysham.

PS, if you do like the sound of the rural life, PM me and I’ll recommend my village 😊.

Whittle, brinscall, Withnall, Croston, Buckshaw Village, Eccleston all offer a nice location that's got the beach - (Southport, Formby), greenery - (the lakes, rivington pike etc), cities - (Manchester, Liverpool, Preston) all under an hour and, of course, close enough to Lancaster.

Not Buckshaw unless you want a tiny modern house in a sprawling estate. Chorley is nicer or near Preston Park in Leyland.

RandomMess · 16/11/2022 18:48

House prices are dropping in and around Lancaster so I'd keep looking. Also consider the villages Caton, Halton or Garstang.

Don’t do Wrea Green, yes lovely Village but zero diversity, it’s literally a place where you walk in the one and only pub and everyone stops and stares at you.

Kirkham & Wesham, a nice market town with lots of new builds going up and influx of new families.

Poulton is definitely not too Blackpooly, it can be a bit like Wrea Green, some stuck up snobs but in general it’s actually a nice town, lots of nice restaurants and bars.

Dont rule out Blackpool, they are some nice suburbs.

Lytham & St Anne’s definitely lovely.

Just down the road is Wharton, a bit of a concrete cow feel but you could definitely gets something nice for your budget.

Only area around Morecambe I know is Hest Bank which is nice but I think pricey.

Definitely some nice areas of Cumbria but I’d check your face fits. I had family in Kendal and they said it wasn’t the easiest to fit in.

Ribble Valley definitely nice but you pay for the post code in most areas. Clitheroe is nice.

Stay away from Buckshaw Village unless you want your kids to be beaten up walking in the park. Google it.

Preston has a bad rep but they are working on improving it. There is definitely lots going on and some nice ares. Good for commuting.

Garstang is also nice.

Longridge is a place to look at too.

How about Wirral? Lots of coast and countryside but close to Chester and Liverpool for city stuff.
