How long have your dental crowns lasted?

I have a crown on a bottom molar that's lasted approximately 30 years, possibly more. Just curious about long your crowns have lasted? I know that in theory, with good hygiene and luck, they can last even longer, but am curious to hear how long other people's have lasted?

I will be soooo brassed off if it falls out tonight when chewing that cheap crunchy cereal I'm trying....

DH has crowns on his front two teeth, from when he was a small child. One has needed replacing but the other is still going strong after 40+ years!

I have a dental condition called Dentinogenesis Imperfecta which, among many other side effects, makes my teeth very brittle. I got my first set of crowns at age 12 and they were replaced at age 30 due to corrosion and growth. I was advised that I wouldnt be able to have them replaced a third time so I'm hoping I can make it to 50 before my condition gets the better of this set and I need dentures. In fairness, getting to 50, with my condition as bad as it is, would be a win😊

newbookonshelf · 15/11/2022 16:15

I got my root canal privately and the permanent crown on the NHS in 2009 and it still looks good, just like my other teeth.

miceonabranch · 15/11/2022 16:29

About 14 years.

chipsandpeas · 15/11/2022 16:30

ive just lost a crown thats been in for about 15 years

Powaqa · 15/11/2022 16:30

36 years for one and 33 for the other

Slig · 15/11/2022 16:41

My crowns were put in when I was pregnant! Got them free. The baby is now 37!!

Blimey!!

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 15/11/2022 16:48

My first one was put on when I was 9 and only got removed when I got a new front set done when I was 33. Have had my full set in since then and just hitting 50 so 24 years for the first one and almost 17 now for the others. Not bad going!

Mangolist · 15/11/2022 16:50

30 years - front. Although one fell off this year and had to be re stuck!

iliketartan · 15/11/2022 17:09

I have a gold crown that's been in around 32 years

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 15/11/2022 20:13

Bloody hell - and I thought mine was doing well! Here's hoping it lasts another 20 years then!

Be careful OP! I had a crown for 25 years. Dh was having one of his replaced and I said "I'm very lucky this crown has lasted so long". It fell out the following week.

declutteringmymind · 15/11/2022 20:19

Dentist here. Crowns work really well most of the time. However they do suffer from being tempted by fate to fail. Just keep them clean and floss them.

The studies suggest up to 1 in 5 need a root canal but my experience is a lot less than that.

Big cheers to all your crowns, the unsung hero in the technician who made them, as well as the dentist who placed them.

Trolltrotters · 15/11/2022 20:23

Seven years. Apparently it's failing now and it'll cost me £1k to replace. I don't have a spare £1k kicking around so I'll have to keep it as clean as possible and hope.

I have a porcelain crown. What crowns has everyone got lasting 30 years?

declutteringmymind · 15/11/2022 20:27

Gold is still the gold standard. It is the best material. Rarely done now due to the cost but if I needed a crown on a back tooth I would get either full gold, or porcelain bonded to ducera gold. When made well, you cannot feel the junction between crown and tooth with the tip of a probe. Easy to clean, plaque doesn't stick easily will mould to your natural bite over the time if its on the bite surface, and needs the least preparation to the tooth.

Mindymomo · 15/11/2022 20:30

I have a back molar crowned that must be 30 years old, similar aged crown next to front teeth was recently replaced just because of my age and age of crown there was a gap at the top of crown.

OldTinHat · 15/11/2022 20:31

28yrs for mine so far, probably shouldn't tempt fate though...

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 15/11/2022 20:42

@Pallisers - I know! I'm hoping I've not jinxed it...

Don't know what it's made of, though definitely not gold...

The original tooth crown was attached to lasted at least 36 years but when that snapped a new crown required to go onto the steel post inserted to replace the tooth.

WhatTeaspoon · 16/11/2022 08:58

I had an accident as a child and lost my two front teeth so have a six unit bridge. It was replaced when I was 32 at Birmingham dental hospital, I am now 56. There is no way the NHS will replace so I will have to pay for something privately if it goes. I think screw in teeth would not be possible because I have lost so much of my jawbone from an infection post accident as a child, they drilled it away.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 16/11/2022 12:24

@WhatTeaspoon - I sometimes think about the cost if this one goes, it was NHS all those years ago, but dread to think what it would cost now. Here's hoping your bridge lasts indefinitely!
