I won't link to the Daily Fail. Suffice to say that there is an article about this amazing "hack" this woman has shared. She hangs clothes on hangers, then puts them on her airer. This way she saves energy (on ironing) and time (on folding clothes from the airer, ironing them and then hanging them in the wardrobe).
To quote an extract - she "has found a way to dry clothes more effectively on a clothes horse by using hangers to hang items which takes up less space." There are photos, and a video of clothes on hangers being put on the airer.
Well, that's amazing. Nobody ever thought of that before did they?
Does anyone else feel like sharing blindingly obvious "hacks" that they've been doing for ages, or maybe even watched their parents do?
Here's mine. When I take my socks off the airer (where they didn't need a coat hanger) I pair them up and fold the tops over together to keep them in their pairs. Saves me so much time when I want to put socks on. My partner has never seen this hack before and is going to make a video for Insta.
Oh, and sometimes I hang things on hangers and... wait for it... put them on the clothes line to dry that way. 😮

I've been doing this for years. I hang them on the arms of the whirlygig when dry, on the airer in the greenhouse when raining. Finish on the kitchen maid. Straight in the wardrobes. Everyone has a different colour of hanger too makes it easier to put away. Look forward to seeing me on insta ;)

We used to buy Take a Break in the 80s especially for the 'Top Tips' page, then spend ages debating if any of them were real or if the whole page were full of wind up merchants Grin

So basically, Insta and TikTok are the 2020s version of Take a Break and Viz Top Tips.

Funniest one I saw recently was the 'DIY airfryer' 'hack' by using a 'little known feature' in a standard domestic oven of using the fan setting to, wait for it, cook food like oven chips, chicken nuggets etc, just like an air fryer.

This revelation, which completely missed the point of an air fryer that it's quicker and cheaper than the oven that everyone's more or less stopped using, was shared hundreds of thousands of times by people who couldn't believe the genius of the idea.

I remember this, some were hilarious. The one I best remember is sticking sanitary towels to your feet instead of slippers.

My favourite TAB top tip, was the person who wore a shower cap whilst weeding under low bushes, to stop twigs getting caught in her hair.
I am gifted with an airing cupboard which is big enough to take an sorer and a number of garments on hangers.
It is one of the main reasons why I will die in this house!

Justleaveitblankthen · 15/11/2022 06:39

Hehe, they were so funny at the time. I had two of mine printed. Adding a photo of the TopTip got you abit more money I think.😁
It all took much longer before smartphones

I am extremely relieved that is all this woman is using coat hangers for. Your title had me worried 😄

AlwaysLatte · 15/11/2022 07:02

Ha! I use this 'hack' hanging them on my Sheila maid. I had no idea I was such a genius!

sashh · 15/11/2022 07:13

I (well my carer) hang clothes on hangers from the curtain rail which is over the radiator.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/11/2022 07:16

When drying clothes outside I use little clips to stop them blowing around the garden. Saves me so much time trying to find my knickers in the vegetable patch.

NearLifeExperience · 15/11/2022 07:28

Oh dear lord that's ridiculous! I hang up most things on hangers as I have two long rails on my utility room ceiling.

My favourite TAB tip: when doing the washing up, place spoons bowl side down, so the washing up water can run out, and they can dry more quickly and without leaving a horrible residue in the bowl. It apparently took one reader decades of manky spoons to realise this!

The thing is, we aren't born with all the knowledge acquired by human beings to date, so for someone this will be a big "aha!" moment!

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2022 07:34

I also use hangers in my wardrobe. I put the clothes on hangers and then hang the hangers on the handy rails I’ve got installed inside my wardrobes. I’ve also got doors on my wardrobe, which I close. I’m great, me.

Has she tried putting clothes on hangers and using these to suspend them from the rails in her wardrobe? Personally, I find that's a really useful way to stop clothes getting creased, especially for things like blouses, jackets and dresses.

Hack of the day, refresh threads if you go off to make a cup of tea while reading them, to avoid duplications with previous posters.

And an extension of tha is before applying little clips to the line put your hand out, open palm upwards to check that it isn't raining as this will increase the drying time.

k1233 · 15/11/2022 08:00

I've got a great one. Get a nice flat stick - a ruler is perfect. Take the scrubbing brush from the laundry and hot glue the back of the scrubbing brush to the ruler, position the scrubbing brush at the end and leave a handle. Perfect tool for getting knots out of your hair.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/11/2022 08:06

My dp was reading one out to me the other day 'life hack to demist your car windows' The hack? Turn on the engine and set the blowers to point at the windscreen Grin

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/11/2022 08:09

I did see my neighbours 'life hack' for her washing and actually thought it was a great idea, it was warm outside but raining, she used hangers to hang her clothes on her garden swing so the canopy covered them.

BooksAreSaferThanPeople · 15/11/2022 08:11

When I hang out washing, I sort the socks into pairs as I hang. So when the washing is dry, I save loads of time pairing socks by spending loads of time pairing them as I hang. Genius.

That's where my thoughts went too.

JauntyJinty · 15/11/2022 08:14

reminds me of when the daily mail printed their amazing money saving tip of taking your own bag to the supermarket to avoid the 5p charge!

I'd like to think Daily mail journalists are that stupid, or that they think their readers are that stupid - but I think it more likely they do it get free headspace on places like Mumsnet!

mondaytosunday · 15/11/2022 08:20

I used to work in publishing. We had a magazine that just needed seasonal page fillers. So every year there was an article on sunscreen and what SPF means, avoid the beach between 12-3pm; in winter it was 'turn your heat down 2 degrees to save costs', consider double glazing, insulate your loft'. Christmas issues about the same old same old.
Basically pages need filling. And there's not a lot new under the sun.
