I have been sharing a property with family to save money. One person has the Wi-Fi router in their name even though we all contribute towards it. They threaten to change the password when they're annoyed and we cant do anything about it because technically its theirs. I have an expensive data package but it doesnt work unless I'm out and about. Would it be possible to have two seperate wifi routers at the same address?

They are also claiming that my silvercast plug in radiator alone costs over £20 a week. which sounds excessive. I have it on a few days a week for a few hours a time. It doesnt sound right and I think theyre taking the piss? I said Im not paying it and they said their electric went up that much when I started using it.

I am making arrangements to live somewhere else in a few months but have to put up with them in the meantime.

a few days a week for a few hours a time

Wow! It really could be ££££

Oh dear. That doesn't sound ideal at all.
What a horrible housemate you have 🤬🤬

Good luck to them finding a new housemate.

Re: WiFi. You should be able to run a hotspot from your phone. You can also get portable WiFi from mobile service providers. I have a backup for working from home.

Re: your radiator. They might be right, unfortunately. If you have a smart meter you'll be able to see how much the electricity usage goes up when you have it on and work out the cost.

Hot water bottle in the meantime?

Hope you get a new place sorted, this sounds horrible.

They said it costs £100 a month. Its insane a plug in radiator can cost that much alone.

They really can be expensive to run, don’t assume they are exaggerating.

Look on the label on the radiator and look at your kwph tariff.

You use the following formula to calculate the energy used by an appliance: Power rating in kilowatts x hours used per day = kWh per day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 14/11/2022 17:47

As pp said, look at the wattage on your radiator.
If its eg 2kw, it'll cost you up to 68p an hour to run (assuming your unit rate for electric is 34p=kwh).

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 14/11/2022 17:59

The data: just switch off your wifi connection option, and it should default to your data, assuming that is switched on.

The radiator: depends on wattage. A 2kW radiator would be about 70p an hour. 4 hours a day would be 100 a month.
