If you have spare money, what do you plan to give up/ keep going as life gets more expensive?

Firstly, I am very aware that many people have no choice in where their money goes at the moment. But if you do have a bit extra, where are you choosing to spend it, and what do you think you might give up?

For us, eating out has gone. We are focusing on enjoying good food at home, often with friends. Next meal our will be New Years Day. Board game/ film evenings have been good, cheap fun and will feature heavily over Christmas. I’m not buying any clothes for the foreseeable, as I already have enough to dress an army (provided they are willing to fight in jersey dresses and Converse). I’m trying to buy fewer books, as I’ve plenty to read at home, and am using the local book exchange. We’ve chosen to keep the kids hobbies and lessons going, but it’s a ‘no’ to starting anything new if it’s expensive. We will probably cut back on holidays, or go closer to home next year. We are still buying meat from our farm shop, even if the supermarket is cheaper. And plan on keeping our cleaner and dog walker as they are lovely people and keep us sane. Big purchases for the house, like a new wooden floor and sofas are very much on hold. Christmas trips are mostly local pantos and light trails, which I suspect the kids will enjoy as much as anything.

Anyone else thinking about this?

I never really eat out as there’s nowhere I especially like. I went to Angus Steakhouse today in central and the food was so bland and awful. It was literally a waste of money.

No matter how much money I have, I’ll always find a way to treat myself to a Starbucks frappe once a week! It’s my little treat😂

whiteroseredrose · 14/11/2022 20:57

We hardly ever eat out or get takeaways so they aren't going to notice any changes in our habits!

At the moment we have elderly MIL with us so I'm trying to tempt her to eat. When she goes home we will eat more cheaply for everyday meals.

We will also be able to turn the heating down from tropical.

I still want to do a bit of travelling, but weekend breaks to cheap destinations like Krakow, Istanbul and Lisbon.

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/11/2022 20:57

We sold one car and changed the other to a cheaper one. I’m still going to the hairdresser, but less often. Never buy takeaway coffee, look for free Kindle books, have a stash of craft stuff that will do for ages.

We haven't cut back on anything - we're very fortunate.

WordtoYoMumma · 14/11/2022 20:59

I've cancelled the gym and am trying very hard to only buy clothes from charity shops. We rarely eat out anyway.

My Pret subscription is staying for as long as I can possibly justify it, those daily flat whites and occasional gingerbread lattes make life worth living!!

Yes my Starbucks on a Wednesday morning is my reward for going into the office Grin

Gingerwarthog · 14/11/2022 21:21

Don't eat out (much) any more - a few years ago this was once weekly.
Stopped buying myself clothes - except necessary stuff - knickers, tights etc
Stopped having hair coloured and as it's long only have it cut three times a year.
Heating not going on where possible - only on for an hour or two a day if colder

However:

I'm still studying for a post-grad Degree (work FT and doing degree P/T) and paying the fees for this. Not negotiable- in my final year.
We have a lovely cleaner and I'm not knocking her income by cutting her hours
We swim several times weekly - not stopping
Will buy books for me and DD as long as I have any money to do so

Haha you deserve it! Mine is to reward myself for looking after two kids under 18 months and somehow surviving the week😬

Enjoy your Starbucks this week:)

My eyebrow threading and our cleaner are absolutely the last things to go.

I can eat fairly cheaply, I will eat porridge for every meal before I give up my eyebrows 😅

KangarooKenny · 14/11/2022 21:27

I’ve stopped having my hair highlighted, but won’t give up a cut n blow. Although I might go for a wet cut only if necessary.
Im not giving up having my eyebrows tinted, I’d look like an alien if I gave that up.
I go out to eat very rarely, so happy not to.
Ive given up drinking lately, although I will treat myself to a bottle or two at Xmas.
I only buy clothes that I need, and live on a 3 day rotation of outfits.

QualityAndQuantity · 14/11/2022 21:40

DH has one of the first places on the order list for the new Lotus sports car, and is wondering now if it’s justifiable to buy another car.

I’m “hands off”; it’s his choice, but for the first time ever he’s equivocating.

How does the 3 day outfit rotation work?

Angus Steakhouse is pretty-much known as a tourist trap, somewhere that no-one who’s eaten there before will ever go back to, so I’m sorry that they caught you out.

A better mid-market steak place is Miller and Carter. It’s still a chain, but a decent one.

WeightoftheWorld · 14/11/2022 22:35

I am being a lot stingier with the heating when I'm alone at home and on evenings when kids are in bed. DH bought me a heated blanket which is making this bearable for me as I really feel the cold.

Haven't booked a holiday for 2023 and unsure if we ever will. Originally was even considering going abroad but that definitely won't be happening. We've not actually been on a holiday abroad since I was pregnant with DD who is now 4.5, for some context. DS doesn't have a passport, and we aren't bothering to get him one anymore due to cost given we won't be going abroad.

One side of the family, we do secret Santa and we've all agreed to half the budget this year for that. I'm also reducing how much I spend on birthday presents for kids that my kids get invited to their parties just by a few quid but it adds up. Reducing how much I'm going to spend on my neices Xmas present by a third and same for two little ones who are family friends and same for their birthdays.

Reducing our leisure spend generally. Weekends for us would be typically very busy, quite a lot of lunches and desserts out, and a lot of paid-for activities like soft play etc. We've massively reduced this but actually I don't feel the children are missing out for it at all anyway.

When I'm WFH I often go to DPs to work so I don't have to heat my house or sit in a cold house. There's always someone in there and house is always warm and fridge full of food for lunch. They're pretty wealthy.

Have become stingier with clothes purchases for me and DD. Also for cosmetics/toiletries for myself.

Oh really? I used to love the one in Piccadilly Circus as the food was honestly really nice! I went last year and the food was meh but thought I’d give it another try today and I couldn’t even finish my meal. They’ve changed the menu and everything I’ve tasted has not been restaurant quality at all.

Thank you for the recommendation, I’ll give that a try

PottyDottyDotPot · 14/11/2022 23:22

it’s so easy to do them yourself at home, a £7 box lasts me about 12 goes.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/11/2022 23:37

I'm keeping my manicure as it's the only thing that stops me biting and breaking my nails. I realised on another thread that it was cheaper than a lot of places are though.

I'm keeping the payday takeaway treat but limiting eating out to mostly just that - healthier too.

I wait long times between dyeing my hair and have it a colour that doesn't show the grey much until it's grown through quite a bit. I am happy to be grey to be fair. DD has expensive hair appts but they are few and far between due to the style she likes.

Dieting so not buying new clothes - I have a whole wardrobe to fit into that doesn't fit yet! Not paying out for a slimming class either. And I'm cancelled my fitness class membership to change it for a place that is pay as you go so if I can't make a class I don't feel like I'm losing money.

I'm expecting a payrise so hoping that will go some way to us still being able to have a holiday this year.

Spectre8 · 14/11/2022 23:44

I thought about saying no more this but found it a bit too restrictive so now I just say I have £30 a week to spend on misc stuff whether thats hot chocolate, meal out, take away etc. But that's my limit. That way I can still have a bit of flexibility to decide.

However I am being more mindful and not having takeaways and thinking twice.

I dont necessarily need to do this but I want to maintain my level of savings and holidays so have to cut back elsewhere to do so.

It’s supposedly like “Spaghetti House” in terms of their model for pricing, quality etc.

Ozgirl75 · 15/11/2022 05:10

We are also fortunate that we don’t have to cut back, but we did a “value” audit of our spending, and anything for leisure that we didn’t really love, got binned. I was paying a “go as often as you want” to Pilates but I often only went once a week so that’s gone as I did t enjoy it that much anyway.
Cancelled a couple of app subscriptions. Cut out tennis squads for the kids as they did that and a lesson and preferred the lesson anyway. Cut my cafe trips to a couple of times a week as it was becoming just a “normal” thing rather than an enjoyable treat.
I would never give up my cleaner or my eyelash and eyebrow tint or my morning exercise class which I both benefit from, and love.

Ozgirl75 · 15/11/2022 05:13

We already got a new car 18 months ago - downgraded from a big Jeep to a Toyota Rav 4. Mainly because it seemed mental to have a 5litre engine for puttering around and although we do longer journeys and off road journeys now and then (we’re in Aus), not enough to justify a big 4x4.
So good as the Toyota costs half as much to fill up, the tank lasts twice as long and the servicing is an absolute fraction of the cost.

I have 3 sets of clothes only and wear them on rotation.

spacewomanonearth · 15/11/2022 17:49

I've got to spend a big chunk on my house this year, they are really needed as I'm struggling with the lack of space and can't afford to move. These were long term plans & unfortunately because of the price rises I'm really going to have to avoid meals out and other treats like nails etc.

I will be spending 4 x times what I usually do in a year, but different things.

I'm hoping to keep other COL items such as food / energy bills as low as possible to help keep my head above water.

I've pretty much cut everything excess out due to Covid and didn't reinstate a lot of things, so nothing to cut there.

Got a bursting wardrobe and house, so hopefully will spend the next 12 thinning that out, a lot of selling on eBay/Vinted if I can.

I'll hopefully be able to afford to go abroad in 2023 as I haven't been for over 4 years.
