How much to ask for a refund

Newwardrobe · 14/11/2022 10:50

I bought an ottoman bed for my dd and her bf for their first home together. We had the man from the shop assemble it but because it's ex display and the screws have been removed for it to be transported, they now won't hold and the base keeps collapsing. The shop have said they will try and find new parts but because it's not stocked anymore it's doubtful they will be able to.

The other option is to have the bed adapted some how so it doesn't collapse. Dd wants to keep the bed ( it's got a tv in the foot end ) and doesn't mind if the ottoman bit doesn't work. I can't afford to put any money towards a brand new one.

How much money would you say is reasonable to ask as a refund/ compensation?

Stick a raw plug into the hole for the screws, put screws back in.

WeepingSomnambulist · 14/11/2022 10:56

(I'm assuming it is wooden. You can get rawl plugs for wood so get those ones).

LeafHunter · 14/11/2022 10:58

What new parts does it need - part of the base or part of the screws?

It doesn't need any new parts.
The holes for the screws have worn. When that happens, you put a rawl plug in and it gives you a brand new seat for the screws. Screw back in and it will hold.

I actually cant believe that the OP, her daughter and the BF (all adults) and the people who work in the bed place (also adults) couldn't figure that out.

The man tried gluing the screws in but they didn't hold , the metal struts that they are meant to hold are really heavy.

They're going to try and find a new base, but that will have been taken apart too so we'll probably be in the same position.

Glue wont work, obviously.

It doesn't matter how heavy the thing is. Use rawlplugs. That's how you screw thing into walls. Want to hang your TV? Drill a hole in the wall, put in a rawlplug to provide a seat for the screws and screw in your TV mount. It holds the TV up. Weight doesn't matter.

Same thing. If its metal, get rawlplugs for that, its wood then good rawlplugs for wood, although it doesn't actually make any difference. Put them into the holes, then sceew the thing together. It will hold.

Am I invisible?

SheilaWilde · 14/11/2022 11:10

Rawl plugs. You don't need a new base. If it's ex-display you probably bought it 'as seen' so won't be entitled to a refund.

Has anyone seen Weeping Somnambulist 👀

Newwardrobe · 14/11/2022 11:17

Sorry @WeepingSomnambulist I will let the man know to use rawl plugs .

@SheilaWilde we didn't know it was an ottoman, neither did the salesperson! Dd laid on it in the shop and it didn't collapse , it's not fit for purpose and the shop said if we can't find a solution I will get a full refund. They have also said that they will give me some more money off if it can be repaired and I was wondering how much to ask for.

until you know how much it will cost to fix, you dont know how much to ask for

WeepingSomnambulist · 14/11/2022 11:19

Does she still have it in her house? You dont need a man to do this.

They cost about £2. Buy the right size for the screws that came with it, put them in (push them in or gently use a hammer to get them seated) then screw it together.

You're probably not going to get much more than 5/10% back for that sort of issue.

WeepingSomnambulist · 14/11/2022 11:20

@NadjaCravensworth

It will cost approx. £2 to fix.

Newwardrobe · 14/11/2022 11:22

I'm not doing it myself because if it is still faulty after I've put rawl plugs in, they'll blame me and I won't be able to get a refund.

OP posts:
WeepingSomnambulist · 14/11/2022 11:28

It the actual problem is the screw holes being worn down, so the screws are loose and come undone causing it to fall apart then it will not be faulty once they are properly screwed in.

Provide a tight seat for the screw, either by filling the hole and then re-drilling (more work) or using a rawlplug and the problem will be fixed.

I'm sorry but I've no patience for people who lack the ability to manage basic fixes. It's just common sense.

SheilaWilde · 14/11/2022 11:29

Then I'd start at 50% refund and you take responsibility for fixing it.

PeopleRStrange · 14/11/2022 11:34

Most of those beds are bolts, not screws and should have metal collar parts for the bolts to connect to. Is it actually screws?

I'm happy to take on diy fixes , I've fitted a toilet cistern, put up curtain rails, done a bit of plastering etc but this is a new bed and expect it to function. I wasn't asking how to fix it, just how much to ask as a partial refund.

"They have also said that they will give me some more money off if it can be repaired and I was wondering how much to ask for."

You'd need to get a handyperson to quote and then you'd ask them for that much off. Plus at the very least someone would need to see the actual problem to estimate a cost. No one can be sure from the information given, where new base parts may or may not be needed.

Gluing the screws? Is there glue residue in the holes now? If so he might have created more of a problem.

I couldn't see any glue in the holes , and I would rather their chap is liable for causing any more problems than me .
