Is it normal for DD's temperature to go so high

When my 2 year old gets ill her temperature spikes far higher than I would expect it to, for instance when she was much younger I took her to a&e as her temp was 41, they couldn't find anything wrong and put it down to tonsillitis after initially saying her tonsils are only slightly red, that won't be the cause of that level of fever.

A few weeks ago, she was poorly but other than saying her tummy hurt the only thing wrong with her was a fever which spiked at 40.4.

This weekend she's got a bit of a runny nose, not a bad cold at all and her temp has been 39.5.

It's not the thermometer because my other DD doesn't record the same level of fever and they both have the same normal temperature.

Does anyone elses children react the same? Should I be mentioning this to a doctor?

I'm not overly worried, because she's generally fine and she is always fully alert when her fevers are that high but I keep being told that it's not normal. She does also seem to pick up every illness around, do you think this could be a consequence of her being a lockdown baby?

The issue with a fever isn't necessarily how high it is but how fast it rises (that's what causes convulsions)
If she responds to calpol etc then I wouldn't worry

My daughter tends to get a high temperature with any illness . Her normal temperature seems to be slightly higher than normal .
I try and just go off how she is in herself and if paracetamol bring the temperature down .
I would speak to a dr though if you are concerned.

DD is the same. She always got really high temps. We had a brilliant GP who advised us to not worry and not to give antibiotics unless it's obviously an infection. Just Calpol and cold compress. I'm glad we listened as DD is now 14, barely ever gets sick and never once had antibiotics. She stopped getting high fevers once she hit about 11 but even then, it was very rare, I'd say once a year tops. It was weird too as she very rarely got any colds, just high temps for 2 or 3 days once a year or so.
Don't worry, it's completely normal.

My ds2 does this. At least I’m a a month he’ll get a random temperature spike to 40c and it will hover around 39/40 for a day or two. Sometimes he’ll also gets. Viral rash. Can count the amount of times I’ve taken him to see the dr who just says as long as calpol brings it down and he’s not floppy or unresponsive then it’s fine. He’s now 4 but it’s been happening since he was about 18 months

I guess it’s one of those things. He just gets viruses easily. Apart from the temp and maybe being a little out of sorts he’s always fine. He has blood tests for another reason and they don’t show anything so it’s a bit of a mystery

Travelplans · 13/11/2022 21:35

It's good to know this is relatively normal then. I find Calpol doesn't really bring her temp down, I do need to give ibuprofen to get it down.

My son always gets a ridiculously high temperature. It always comes down with calpol so I don't worry. The only time I did take him to A&E was when calpol wouldn't touch it and he was struggling to breathe. He had a really bad chest infection. It was amazing how quickly he deteriorated. Seemed like a normal virus when he went to bed and by 2am his breathing was laboured. He ended up in hospital for 3 nights. I think you can usually tell when a temperature is worrying as it either doesn't come down, is accompanied by no other symptoms, or there are severe symptoms that clearly require medical assistance.

I'm one for spiking a temperature when ill. 42 43 isn't unheard of.

Apparently its just a very strong immune response which does make sense as my immune system is a beast.

Even Norovirus only kept me down for 12 hours. (And it was Noro, the whore store went down with it)

If she's well with it then I wouldn't be too concerned. A fever is the immune system doing it's job so unless it's an issue in itself, I don't try to bring it down.

I think you might need a new thermometer!

P.s. Hope your DD feels better soon!

Although it is immune's response a fever that you don't bring down puts a serious strain on your heart. If you do this often it can seriously weaken and damage it.

Actually if your temperature reaches 43 you pretty much turn to scrambled egg. You'd likely be convulsing and would experience respiratory collapse. Very few people survive a temperature this high and if they do they usually have irreparable brain damage. She's talking bollocks of she thinks it's the norm for her temp to reach 43.

Brunonono · 14/11/2022 08:15

My daughter spikes high temperatures. Nursery were always sending her home as she felt hot and they'd check, see she was 39.5 and ring me sounding very concerned but for her, the exact number didn't worry me.

Once she hit 40 and was old enough to explain what was wrong but she said she didn't feel ill! Definitely not a faulty thermometer as the rest of our family never get readings that high so must just be a variation of normal.

Notanotherwindow · 14/11/2022 10:10

Nope, I just run hot. I've been to A&E with it a few times as the GP was very concerned but apparently some people just do get high fevers.

Tdcp · 14/11/2022 10:13

I run hot in general so when I get a fever it's usually very high. I've always been the same.

As a medically qualified person I do not believe you had a temperature of 43 and were able to get to the GP and not rushed to the hospital as an emergency. Especially as an adult as adults do not tolerate a fever as well as children. Anyone reading this who has a child with a temperature of 43 should call an ambulance.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 14/11/2022 10:15

My DD always spiked high temps in a fever. We definitely saw 41. This mainly seemed to happen at nursery and before the age of 5. She seems to have less dramatic responses now she is older. My DS never had the same reaction.

Notanotherwindow · 14/11/2022 20:15

@BlondeWaves Believe what you like, it makes no odds to me.

I felt pretty shit but not ambulance worthy by any means. I couldn't drive but was perfectly capable of getting in a cab. My normal body temperature is 37.6 so I'm warmer than average anyway. I think its just my body. They said I might have an infection but by the time my bloods were done it was dropping anyway so nothing was done either time.

I don't bother now, I know it won't stay that high for long anyway.

chipshopElvis · 14/11/2022 20:23

Mine both did this when little. They've grown out of it now but it probably carried on until about 7.

MargaretThursday · 14/11/2022 20:52

One of mine used to.

If her temperature started going up, then it would go up, hit 40-41 and stay there for three days of full doses of calpol/ibroprofen and then go back to normal. Never anything noticeable wrong with her other than a temperature and she would be happily running round playing.

My other two are lying down looking very weak and ill before it hits 39. It was unusual for them to hit 40 degrees.
